On a similar (computer related) theme - why does my wireless router keep turning orange (disconnected) instead of staying green? (It's a Belkin if that makes any difference). When I unplug then plug in again it's OK, for an unpredictable length of time...

Do you have ASDL? Do you plug a lead from your phoneline into the router? If so, is it plugging into quite a long extension lead?

I've had a similar problem with a Belkin router. It had a tendency to lose the connection after a while - usually a LONG while - and it didn't always even change from a green light to a red one when it lost the connection. It would be OK after switching it off and leaving it a few minutes before switching on again. Eventually, however, it stopped connecting at all and I had to return it to the shop for an exchange (it was only a couple of months old).
I replaced it with the same model which has mostly been fine, touch wood. It does, occasionally, lose the connection - but it's pretty rare, and it's six months old now.
Most of these things come with a lifetime guarantee (I suppose they assume that by the time its designed shelf-life is up, you'll want much newer technology anyway!)

Thanks, both. Don't actually know what ASDL is so can't answer your question, Michael, but yes, there is a lead from the phone line, via another router - for some reason, it wouldn't work without the one for the desktop.
Ruth, you sound as though you have had similar problems, and I have had a couple of "green light disconnections" too. I did think of buying a new one but wasn't sure whether it was a power problem, a BT problem or something with the router itself.

OK, it's only a tree BUT...neighbours over the road have had their magnificent mature lime butchered. It was the largest and loveliest tree on the road, now all it is is a tall stump with pathetically short stumps of branches coming off it. Not a single leaf left on it - even those below the chop-line were removed. I was too upset to go over to express my dismay - perhaps I should have done but by the time I realised what the appalling noise was, half the greenery had gone. Had that poor tree been blamed for causing subsidence surely they'd have felled it completely - the fate which befell the last mature tree victim on the road, a beautiful beech. It's a large front garden and the tree wasn't that close to the house. Anyway, that tree's been there for at least 40 years whereas the house was built in the garden of an older house, about 10 years ago. I expect the neighbours, who've not been there very long, will assure me that the tree will regrow branches and leaves but it will take many years and it will never be the majestic tree it was until this morning. MJ on behalf of the owls who liked to perch in it every night.

Do you think perhaps the tree had become dangerous? In my time I've had to have three enormous and beautiful old pear trees felled, because they were in danger of falling on someone. It was very sad, but trees don't live for ever. Or it could be causing damage to the drains, even if it isn't close to the house. On the other hand I have known people who have trees felled because they don't like the untidiness of fallen leaves . That's really tragic.

There are som e very weird people out there who just fell trees, because of some silly reason. trees are an imp[ortant part of our planet's eco-system and it should be mentioned as such a bit more frequently, say on TV nature programmes.

In the course of learning to work with wood, I prepared a piece from a limb cut straight from the tree. It's rather unsettling how human-fleshy the wood looks when de-barked and still damp. Made me reassess my understanding of the term "limb" of a tree!

Healthy green leaves and sturdy looking branches. But big. Probably shading their front room to much. It looks so ugly now. As I come home down the road I now see bare sky and the pitiful cut ends of branches where there used to be all that beautiful foliage. We're forever getting cards through the door from tree-felling/lopping companies. Our elderly neighbour let some cowboys chop the tops off several of his conifers which were doing no harm at all as we have large gardens. I'm not so concerned about fast-growing conifers though - it's the slow-growing deciduous trees which need protection from these ruthless butchers. Several lovely trees have disappeared from this road in the past 8 years.

I'm involved in a concert today which means I missed the England football for the afternoon rehearsal and I'll miss the England rugby this evening for the concert itself. I don't normally like rugby and I don't understand it much but this one seems more interesting than usual.

The problem is that all modems/routers lose the connection at some point. It can be after a few hours, days or weeks. You will have to dissconnect the power supply (not just by using the on/off switch) switch, for a few seconds and then it will re-boot OK. A computer programmer friend of mine described it all as " a black art." There are more bugs in computer programmes and hardware than on a certain singer's beard ...

One very minor grump. I wish posters wouldn't refer to something written "above". I have my display set so that the latest post appears at the top of the page so the item is actually "below". "Earlier" would be ideal.
