I'm going to be optimistic and say things will settle here and at M&S too. I've been "guesting" over there with no particular urge to register or post, but a strong need to "normalise" the experience over here. Of course, things won't be THE SAME here, but then, I don't think there is (or should be) a sense of "sameness" about any forum - I've had a changing sense of what has made this board tick over the last eight months anyway, sometimes positive, sometimes not.

Things just aren't the same anywhere any more. Such a shame.
Milly, things never stay the same for long, but they move on (sometimes). I'm not feeling at all grumpy at the moment but I don't expect it will last.

Grrrrrrr someoneās messed about with this keyboard and it now gives me ā instead of an apostrophe, _ instead of a question mark, ' instead of a hyphen, ^ instead of plus sign, ų for hash, é for bracket...Oo la la seems to have gone a bit Frenchy! Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.

Well, despite all appearances to the contrary I have too little time to spend it board-hopping, so will be staying on this board until - Radio Three offers something very attractive as an alternative
- R3OK is finally and formally closed
- I can no longer afford an ISP
- Dementia takes over (it hasn't already? )

Grump of the day is the propensity of my workplace internet connection to crash at the very moment when the Royal Opera House website opens for Period 2 booking.
As a result, I am "currently #397 in the queue" in an attempt to get tickets for Midsummer Night's Dream from the public allocation after failing during Friends' Priority Booking.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrgh!!!!
AAAND...
when I DID get through, I couldn't see any of the Period 2 performances (of anything) available for booking. So having been "on hold" on the website for half an hour, I'm now on hold on the phone, and have been for 20 minutes.
Edited again to say: However the situation has now been resolved and the matter has been transferred to the Happy Room.

All of those, or just the one? To paraphrase the advertising of a well-known credit card company, "[one] will do nicely" although given my track record, a minimum of three on the same day is more likely.

I have my first streaming cold for about three years which has somehow also made me deaf in one ear.
Also, still not happy with the message board aggro. I had thought about posting here on a few things that interest me. I could post on the jazz board about a Thelonius Monk album I'm trying to trace to see if it has ever been released on cd ( I'm sure it had Coltrane on it ) I could post on world music about the music of the Caucasus and the Kurdish region of Iran. I could post on early music about my favourite ensembles, Acordone, L'Arpegiatta, Hesperion XXI and the Harp Consort. Or post on classical music pondering why Shostakovich 14 is designated a symphony and not an orchestral song cycle. I could even make a post related to Radio 3 and say that it was a pretty good edition of Late Junction last night.
But I haven't got the motivation just yet.

Hi Bobbyz,
Sorry to see you and others still upset, I won't go on anymore about the various reasons for the split, it's all been said, I'm just looking for the positives that are coming out of all this, and for one just look at the M&S forum: over 50 signed up and already they are well into their subjects in various threads posting more than they might have posted here.
This place looks like it will survive, though I accept it can't ever be the same for some, and that's regrettable I know.

A few days ago I was given a laptop with Windows Vista! I've already heard a lot of bad press about Vista so expectations weren't high. One of the main reasons why I use a computer is to connect to the internet, and I have more reason than ever before to do so since I began using Google Docs to develop, and store articles I work on. I have spent most of today trying to set up an internet connection using Vista. OK, connections aren't the easiest things to get right even with a wizard, so I printed some screenshots from the connection settings on one of the household desktop computers to refer to. As I realized how difficult the task was going to be, I dug out the list of helplines from the documentation and dialled the number only to be told that "telephone support for that product has been discontinued" perhaps should have realized something at that point. I then connected and requested an online chat with a support technician. The impression at the end of the chat was that the tech didn't know much more than I did about what might be wrong. Perhaps I should just install WinXP from the disks that the desktop originally came with? NOT a happy camper ==> I even have a Ubuntu Linux live CD, but haven't figured out how to use that to connect yet...

Hi Kitty, Sorry to hear of problems. I bought a new laptop for work use recently (an Advent from PCWorld) and it's been brilliant. It has Vista Home Premium. Compared to my current PC with XP, built by a friend, this laptop from PCWorld has been trouble-free. Setting up the internet should be about the easist thing to do on a new laptop especially if it's Wireless. You say you were 'given' the laptop. Could be some settings are screwed up in it by previous owner. If you haven't done much work on it yet you might be able to restore to a previous state. I don't know much about that process, always been scared to do that with my old PCs, but maybe someone on here may suggest that or advise you better. Hang in there and see Regards, John W

Ok, just a few questions. 1. How do you connect to the internet? Do you use your telephone line or a cable provider? Do you have to dial any numbers to get a connection to the internet? 2. What leads do you plug into your pc for an internet connection (just a vague description would suffice ). Think thats it for about now. I do know Vista can be troublesome, as I've used it myself and too had issues (with wireless.)

All seems to be well this morning. Given - we went to the store and she bought it for me. (Flowers would have been equally nice but I think she's fed up with me adding stuff to the"family" computer all the time).
Nature of problem: I couldn't read my own handwriting! Actually I hadn't looked too closely when I copied down the password. All is now well. I think. Maybe.
Watch this space (or get a life and do something useful).
But thank you for your helpful suggestions, gentlemen.
