Mary Chambers, I agree with you. I don't think it matters at all. Why do people like to copete so much. A lot of misery could be avoided if people would not be so competative.

It's all very much out of proportion, isn't it, Mary? I suppose the poor dears equate the vast amounts of money they're paid with being important, without realising that they're really just vehicles for media hype and commercial exploitation. I guess we all need something to believe in, and British football in general seems to be as much a test of faith as any religion.

I think it's a primitive male thing - cavemen had to compete to survive, perhaps. We should have outgrown it. I find it so hard to believe that people have so few real worries that they actually think a football match is important, really important - but some people seem to.

Guys; I am going to disagree. Like it or not, a lot of people are mightily tied up with football. We attach, mostly, great value to music; but a hell of a lot more people attach a lot of importance to soccer. Fact. For one thing, the performance of national teams is linked to the testosterone levels of all the team's supporters. Look at any newspaper; half of the space is often taken up with sports. I'm willing to put forward the thesis that us music-lovers are far more delusional than these association football-players.

Might the reason that half the pages are taken up with sports be at least partially attributable to the amount of advertiser's money that's invested in clubs? Sport was always more important to the majority of people than music, but since big business has become so actively involved, the coverage has increased markedly.
And on the primitive male thing: Mary, you've almost certainly never seen girls play football or rugby, but let me assure you than can be every bit as competitive (and dirty) as their male counterparts.

Then they are behaving like primitive males . Can't speak for football, don't follow it at - all overpaid Prima Donnas. But rugby, now that is a great game, but very tribal. For example. Everyone knows South Walians live and breathe rugby but the main thing is - the English have to be defeated. So for example, when the English played South Africa every car here had SA Flags flying and pictures of Percy Montgomery in the shop windows. When Wales never stood a chance we were behind the Scots, the Irish, the Kiwis ...... These games arouse old passions and old grievances.

And then there're the economics. Apparently, the country stands to lose £2 billion in sales income. Mostly beer, probably.

And it's cobblers anyway, martle: if people are going to spend the money, they'll spend it come what may: if it isn't on things directly related to football, then there are plenty of other things instead....

What's important is very much an individual matter. But the idea of the whole country being devastated by losing a soccer match? If only everything were that simple.
