Brings to mind that change of tuning before letter K in the Bruch symphony.

It does, it does... where IS that link though? I was just trying to find it.

 Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

Now why did no one tell me about that when I was a horribly earnest 14-year-old learning the piece and taking it all much too seriously?

Thanks for that Oliver - must give it a listen as I bought the CD ages ago and haven't yet listened to it!

VISTA GRUMP ALERT!
 [allow]      [deny]

This morning I downloaded two PDFs to my memory stick so that I could work on the files at leisure. I set up on my laptop in the kitchen so that I could keep one eye on the mayhem and got started. Everything went fine, but I had to go out for a while, so removed the memory stick, shut down the laptop, packed everything away safely and left.

This afternoon when I had some free time to pick up the threads again, I set up the laptop, inserted the memory stick and ... my PDFs were gone! Normally, with files like that which are only needed temporarily rather than storing them in a folder, I keep them on the top level for easy access. I very much hope that this isn't something Vista is finicky about.

I feel sick at the thought that Vista can just trash my files without warning. And frustrated at the thought that no amount of complaint will get Microsoft to notice me. And I'm not geeky enough to make Ubuntu work (flutters eyelashes).

Just an obvious question or two Kitty, did you use the 'Safely Remove Hardware' tool ?

and have you searched for the file names?

You don't have to be geeky to get Ubuntu to work Kitty, it only took me about 2 weeks to get Kubuntu working on my old desktop! Cheesy Mind you it does cost a fraction of what Vista does ie 0%. And you have to "mount" your memory stick each time before you can access it.

I must say I never use Safely Remove Hardware with XP and I've never had any problems. Never tried Vista though.

Oh, I would if I were you, Andy! It may be fine most times but there's always a first ...

Not that I've ever not used it myself. But I accidentally knocked a memory stick out of the USB port once and I did indeed lose all the files. Sad

I suppose I don't bother with Safely Remove Hardware because I never have the latest copy of any file only on the memory stick, so I can't lose it. Also, since I've got 2 external hard drives connected to the PC, I get 3 USB Mass Storage Devices coming up in the list and I don't know which is which, plus if I've got a camera and/or a minidisc connected I get even more confused.

Me neither, but if they get wiped I don't know what was there and it makes me forget what I was working on! (I must have really serious short-term memory loss. Roll Eyes)

Yes, to both counts. That was when near-terminal (or laptop) despair began to set in.

WOULD THE PERSON PRACTISING TIMPANI IN THE ROOM BELOW ME PLEASE PUT A SOCK IN IT?!?!?

This reminds me of a story I heard recently from one of Birtwistle's marking colleagues during his days at King's, London.  A percussionist was playing an extremely complicated study for timps, notated in four sharps but only involving Es and Bs, and Birtwistle said in that deadpan manner of his: "WOULD YOU MIND PLAYING THAT AGAIN IN E MINOR ..."

That reminds me:
richard - did you ever upgrade to OS X?

My laptop is physically in need of replacement but I can't really afford it. Why isn't there a service when you can get a new case and keep the old innards?
