Sympathies to all having computer problems.

One of my tasks for the evening is to see if I can resuscitate my terminally ill laptop (which I haven't even tried to switch on since June) for long enough to get my Christmas card list, and preferably also my database of my opera programme collection, onto a memory stick for transfer onto my current, working laptop.

This will require the connection of an external keyboard and mouse, and the application of a heavy weight to one corner of the unit so whatever it is inside it that's broken actually forms a viable circuit.

Mort, I have been at work today so missed out on this thread.  What exactly do you find the problem with Outlook Express?  I have it as my default emailer but as I am Virgin I  can access it on any computer via Virgin webmail.  Are you sure you have set the account up correctly with the POPs and stuff?  I only ask cos I know your email address doesn't tell me you are Virgin but something else.

I have a hotmail, rarely used, and a Yahoo (cancelled because it was so intrusive)

I've been with Virgin (and its predecessor NTL) for several years and the only problem I have had is with Outlook Express - for some reason it kept changing the POP server settings for no obvious reason.  I think there must be some inherent problem - but I just abandoned OE and now use Thunderbird instead, which I prefer anyway.

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

Yessss, PW! That exactly it! The damn POP server. Hmm, looks as though it may be time to check out Thunderbird. Once I`ve settled into Googlemail Grin

Mort, I thought I was the only blonde on here, do you know who your POP server is and how to configure an account?

Sigh.

Do you like my new avatar?  Does not that festive cat look like Antheil?  Uncanny, I thought

I bluddy know who my POP server is and so does OE. Until I  click log in and it decides it doesn`t want to know them after all.

Alright, alright Mort!

But have you set everything else up?

(Ducks behind the parapet with a goodly supply of duckweed if Mort is going to be a bad mood.)

Hey, snuffled a couple of donkeys, got room for a couple of little 'uns, we ain't had much work lately.

Welcome, welcome donkeys.  Got any Pliny on you?

Ahem. Deeeep breaths, Mort. I am calm. I am calm. Ommmmmmm.

To be honest Anna, I`ve spoken to so many people at Virgin, all in the same Help department and all of them had different ideas. I`ve now been in and out of my Control Panel, at their instruction , and done so many things it`s no wonder that things are mucked up. Mutter mutter.

Pass us a nut cluster.

Mort, you can have a nut cluster as long as the Donkeys get the strawberry cremes.

I still think you are being cack handed about setting stuff up.

The donkeys had a sudden in-drawing of breath.  They knew folks confused Pliny the Elder with Pliny the Younger,  (Gaius or Caius Plinius Caecilius Secundus, born Gaius or Caius Plinius Caecilius subject of wonderful R3 programme) but all the same to call them, the donkeys and Mort,  cack handed!

They was disconsolent in the extreme.

Alright Mort, but you must admit, you are not the most adept when it comes to Internet stuff are you?

I hate nut clusters, but I will do anything for 100% cocoa mass wrapped around marzipan

But, but, but... but PW said he had exactly the same .... oh all right. I will retire in ignominious shame down to the end of the garden to eat worms. Although I actually much prefer marzipan encased in DARK chocolate.  Hah!

Why is it that at 11:50, when I should be making notes towards this lecture I'm giving tomorrow morning, that the idea of moving the furniture around in my bedroom suddenly seems incredibly attractive?

But, me and Soundwaves have been Virginites for years.   You can't get a better recommendation than that!

Hah! to you too.  Cocoa mass!  Don't come the raw prawn with me!

Because you are taking the idea of displacement activity to literal extremes, maybe?
