Hate to change the subject...but I'm having a narky exchange on TOP.  There's always a smartarse who when they don't agree with your views start calling you inane or whatever.  I'm not in any mood tonight having fought off a migraine all day.  I'm so dosed up with stuff I'm ready to take on the world!  Grin
Milly, that's one of the reasons why I've just about given up posting at TOP: you have my sympathies.
Me too.  Well - that, and Arena-Prommer-bashing, and the likes of a certain person who thinks the Royal Opera House commits fraud.

I don't post over there nearly as much as over here.  The only thing I wish is that my dearest friend from TOP (who is also one of my dearest friends in the real world) would join us over here.  Goodness knows I've told her enough times that we're here.

Keep trying, Ruth. I know who you mean, and it would be great to have her here!

They're a sandwich short of a picnic in TOP.  I'm not posting there again.  I'm beginning to think I speak Chinese!  How could they possibly have interpreted my original post to be the subject of all those replies that followed?  I think TOP should be renamed "Funny Farm".   Roll Eyes

Miserable barstewards the lot of them.  Angry

TOP = The Other Place, ie, the original BBC Radio 3 message board.

I've not been back there since this place opened its doors.  Not so much because of the people who post there as because of the ridiculous level of (over) regulation, which seems to prevail on all BBC boards.

The place never recovered from last year's disasters.

Recently, I tried to open discussions on Roslavets and Glanert: not a single reaction. I placed a link to one of the last poems (recently published) by Michael Hamburger. Again: not a single reaction. This would have been impossible two years ago.

But r3ok is a fine message board! Cool

Quite true Ron Dough. I must say that with their over regulation, like someone else said earlier, does seem to be OTT. I do find that these boards are by far the best, since sliced bread!

Yes, TOP is certainly a less friendly place than it used to be - i only post rarely these days (having said that, I just did post some comments which i expect to be roundly condemned for by someone!)

Still, as we've said, this place is far nicer!

On and off listening to what used to be theJazz, mournful repetition of 3 residual presenters shunted to Classic FM which will shortly do jazz @midnight-2am. What makes me grumpy is the way a well-subscribed service was undermined by insider trading whereby the station was corporate-raided (so Calum de Jazzbo informs me from the City Pages) by the guy who wrecked ITV financially.  B****rds of that ilk should not be allowed to get away with ransacking cultural resources.

What is going on with our cultural resources? I know I am not a great lover of CFM but they do have some rather good programmes, especially Natalie Wheen(I was sorry to see her go from R3) and I like the David Mellor programme on connections, but when people have different view about a station as specialist as CFM, like in this case to put Jazz on at night timeis rather dumbing down effect, especially when they have their own sister station for that medium.

I agree, BBM, I don't think Jazz done Classic FM style would work at all, although-you may not have encountered this-some jazz composition these days overlaps into contemporary classical-but  the likes of Karl Jenkins are against its credo Thank God. Mayhew's got the gig- she has never sounded to me like a natural jazz enthusiast or advocate, but in an eccentric way I think she'll fit on CFM. What's a terrible terrible shame is that the jazz expertise that theJazz was starting to accumulate and its credibility ditto has been frittered away-and let's be under no illusions that the current executive gives a monkeys about classical or any other kind of music unless it  yields a fast buck. I agree that Mellor's not bad and Wheen is ok although she is less and less adventurous inevitably with such a narrow remit.
Bates on movies can be very good editorially-proper grown-up stuff.
The Chiller Cabinet -remixing-surprises me by being really innovative and often nostalgically heartbreaking in its feel for textures and (I think) on the fly composition-so much so that I think it might impress Messrs Barrett and Pace.
Let's hope the phillistine axe doesnt fall on the good bits of CFM in turn.

Credit card companies do annoy me for the reasons listed on this link

http://uk.biz.yahoo.com/12022008/389/10-credit-card-rip-offs-avoid.html

Two other things to add from my experience:

11.
Some statements list the purchases and list say the first 10 purchases on one side of the statement, when there is plenty of room for more, and continue on the other side. That should be easy to spot you may say, but at the bottom of that list of ten they put New balance this sheet and in block type the sub-total.

Caught me out once and I sent a cheque for just the ten items. I'm more careful now.

12.
Companies like Capital One and Sky are sending me invitations to order new credit cards even though I've never had their cards, and the application forms are already partly filled in with my name and address.... I always shred these things.

But, what if I move address? I'm going to tell my usual contacts, family and own credit card companies my new address, but I wouldn't be thinking to tell Capital One or Sky Credit Card. After I've moved they will keep sending these darn things, what if the new occupier decides to use the forms and manages to get a card in my name? Might not get away with it for long but could be a problem for me for a while if he did.

So, from today, I will check the next 'invitations' and see if the small print says how I can stop them.

John W, if  I am not mistaken, you can get a telephone number from the Post Office re junk mail and this may include these so called 'invitations'. A friend of mine mentioned it to me. I will contact him soon to find out, if you like.
