Thank you. I've managed to do it now, I think. It seems to be matter of clicking on the link rather than the image, as I used to, and then Ctrl+v seems to work. At least, it has done once, on the Twitchers thread. Let's see... A random choice of picture.....it works! Is he new? I don't remember seeing him in any of the R30K meetup pictures.

Maybe not, but it's conclusive iconic evidence that the size of music paper used in modern performance practice is far too large and clumsy to be authentic. A7 was obviously all the rage in 18th century Leipzig.

Mary, the ones you're posting that come out with red crosses are all mapped to a location called "i.pbase.[...]". I don't know what that is but I suspect it's a temporary image storage location on your own computer rather than a proper public web address. That would explain why you can see them but we can't.
The Bach picture is coming from a public web address so there's no problem there; did you use a different search method or a different copy-paste method with the other one (and the one on the ornithology thread)?

Mary, lots of websites block you hotlinking to their images (ie posting them on forums, blogs etc). You can view them directly, which puts a copy into your cache (the temporary area where your browser stores images so it doesn't have to download them repeatedly), so when you look at your post you can see the picture. However for anyone else, and also for you once your cache has been cleared (usually when you exit your browser), they are not visible or sometimes are replaced by small images warning you not to hotlink.

I am grumpy because it is such a slow night and few board members are around.
I should be practicing anyhow, but I like people around too.
