I listened to the first City programme, Vienna, on iPlayer.

Impressed!  Haydn-Mozart-Beethoven-Strausses-Mahler

I've even posted about it on the R2 Music Club board.

It wasn't the ClassicFM-type-vague-history-show or Titchmarsh-type-waffle-show there was a LOT of detail squeezed into half an hour, EXPERTS were featured giving much information unknown to me, not much music of course, just snippets, but an excellent programme worthy of Radio 3, but I'm so glad Radio 2 still has a bit of class

What happened to Brahms?

Side Issue: Why are Classical-period composers celebrated so much in Wien, while such as Mahler are comparatively neglected?

Eru,

I thought I heard his name mentioned.... A respondee on R2 Music Club board asks where were Schoenberg, Berg and Webern  Smiley

The minus-point(s) of the programme: too short, with the result that the pace of the programme was far too fast, it was like listening to a news headlines.

But as I always say it's better having these programmes than nothing at all.

Seems I missed the first in the series, Venice. So I would have missed two or three Gabrieli's and Vivaldi, but what else?

Last Friday it was Paris and I enjoyed the focus on Lully and Rameau but the rest of the programme just name dropped Berlioz, Chopin, Liszt, Stravinsky etc with very little music.

Monteverdi mainly. From a thread where I rather embarrassingly ended up replying to myself.

Have to admit that I wasn't sufficiently interested to continue with the Vienna and Paris programmes but interesting to see it on R2.
