Doch hatte bald der Tod mein Wohlbehagen	But death quickly took the contentment
Mir aus dem Arm zu Grab getragen,	out of my arms to a grave.
Und in des Lebens Braus vergaß der Knab	And in the roar of life the boy forgot
Das Schwesterchen im stillen Grab.	the little sister in the still grave.

Ich denke, daß vorm großen Vater muß	I think, that, before the Great Father,
Verstummen Vaterkindesgruß.	the greeting between father and child must not be spoken of.
Doch wird der Schwesterbrudergruß noch gelten,	But the greeting between sister and brother will still be valid,
Und auch den Tausch werd’ ich nicht schelten,	and this exchange will I not complain about:
Wenn, die auf Erden meine Tochter war,	if, on the earth she was my daughter,
Sich dort mir stellt als Schwester dar.	she will be in heaven as a sister to me.
