An Freund Barth To my friend Barth
Ich hatt' im Haus zwei Bilder, I had in the house two pictures,
Die waren ganz gleichgethan. they were equal.
Und eines sah immer milder And one looked always milder
Mich als das andre an. to me than the other one.
Jedes gefiel mir besser, Both I would've better liked,
Das mir zuletzt erschien, that appeared to me,
Das eine nur etwas blässer, that one only a little paler could be,
Das andere mehr Karmin. the other having more carmine.
Das eine war gemalet That one was painted
Von dir nach dem Angesicht of you of your image
Des andern, das gestralet of the other, that shines
Mein lebendes Freudenlicht. my living light of joy.
Mir über'm Arbeitstische To me over my desk
Hing das eine gemalt, hung the one painted,
Da hat es oft mir frische that had often shone
Begeistrung ins Herz gestralt. light into my heart.
Und wenn ausreichen nicht immer And if it doesn't always suffice,
Mir wollte der blässere Glanz, I need the paler radiance,
So ging ich ins Kinderzimmer, so go I to the children's room,
Und labt' am andern mich ganz. and the other refreshes me.
Nun ist im Kinderzimmer Now in the children's room
Erloschen jener Glanz, every light has gone out,
Und halten muß ich am Schimmer and I must hold onto the lustre
Hier über'm Tisch mich ganz. here over the table.
Das Bild hier, das mit jenem The picture here, that with those
Verglichen, das blässere war; compares, that pale was;
Wenn mich nicht täuschen die Thränen, if my tears don't deceive me,
Färbt sichs nun heller gar. now appears lighter.
Ja, wenn es aus soll reichen Yes, if it also should suffice
Allein nun, so muß es auch. alone now, so must I too.
Jenes gab im Erbleichen Those gave in the paleness
Diesem den Lebenshauch. this a breath of life.
Den Sieg hat davon getragen The victory had carried
Über Natur die Kunst; over nature the art;
Der Sieg ist zu beklagen, the victory is to be lamented,
Doch immer die schönste Gunst. but always the most beautiful thing.
