I'd certainly like to hear these famous pieces by Roldan, has anyone else ever heard of him?
Also, during that first performance in New York of Ionisation, didn't a young (perhaps still student) A.Copland play as well as , the rumour  being that the orchestral musicians couldn't really master it, therefore Slonimsky hired composers and Cuban musicians Huh I think there's a disc of a recording made around that time...

The Roldan pieces have been known for ages - Ritmicas 5 + 6 were recorded by Paul Price and the Manhattan Percussion Ensemble c.1955. It's Ritmicas 1-4 (not for percussion ensemble) which are far less well known. Other stuff of Roldan's was published by Cowell's New Music Edition. Ritmicas 5 + 6 are (were ?) published by Southern (I think): I ordered them for where I was teaching about 20 years ago - unfortunately both score + parts disappeared almost immediately . . .

For a post about Slonimsky's recording of Ionisation, see message 55 on this thread

I don't know about the Cuban musicians, but among the performers (I believe they played for free) were Copland, Cowell, Riegger, Creston, Salzedo

... all of which is detailed in the interview to which you yourself posted the link before  Roll Eyes Here it is again, folks, it's well worth a listen:

Goodness me, Salzedo's story is amazing isn't it?

...From the interview it seems that the part I played when we did it in September is one of the simpler ones, which even the NYPO percussionists at the time could play Wink

He looks like a lost gnat on the surface of Arcana's profundities.
The Member is most kind.

I think I shall crawl across it later this evening.

Richard, perhaps you can help with this stratification issue lowered by SCGrew. Will you be using Scuba gear for your crawl across the surface of the profundities? Is this surface deep enough to require Helium? Will you approach this surface from lower or upper face? How will you avoid penetrating this surface, or is that perhaps your intent?

Shostakovich did in fact pick the percussion interlude from his Nose for use in the Suite op. 15a so I presume he dealt with the join problem there.

Thank you Ollie, I am frankly disgusted by the vision of Shostakovich picking his nose under any circumstances... Grin

I chose my words most carefully, Biroc.

I'm disappointed however that you missed the carefully-chose turn of phrase in the next sentence...  Wink

. . . these passages need detailing for us all . . . Pray reveal precisely the nature and location of these arcane and mystical borrowings to the readers of this thread . . .

We would very much like to do that; but in order to do it properly we would need somehow to get hold of a score of Arcana.

A thousand thanks to dot com/Evan for posting this link - a 55 minute programme consisting of an interview with Nicolas Slonimsky but which also contains the original recording of Ionisation which Slonimsky made in 1933 followed by another made by LA players 40 years later. The Slonimsky recording starts at 37:14. I never thought I would have the opportunity to hear it !
