So; anyone check out the finalists yet? Was watching the semifinalists videos - have to say my money's on Ukraine Switzerland continue to take the piss, and I can't remember much else (I missed half of them). Hoping that there'll be something to beat the ignominious "phone number" incident of last year But yeah, I'm excited! Eurovision is such a bizarre phenomenon; I don't think there's anything else like it in the whole world...

I like the fact that this thread has been put under Music Appreciation - 21st Century. But we shouldn't sneer. Didn't Wagner write an opera about a song contest?
The Eurovision Song Contest lost its peculiar charm in the 1970s, in my very humble opinion, but Norway can still be relied upon to come up with something interesting. For me, the quintessential Eurovision song was Jack in the Box, as performed by Clodagh Rogers.

have to say my money's on Ukraine Ukraine can't afford to win again so soon - Kiev staged it in 2006 and I believe they're still paying for it Apparently there are several "operatic" entries this year...

As in national-culturo-poperatic fusion pieces? I'm saving myself up now for saturday; won't watch any more until then...

Yes; it was called Die Meistersinger von Neurovision, I think. Best, Alistair

Die Meistersinger von Neurovision Nul points.... Touché! Yes - just about what that remark deserved, I thought - although I did think that I had at least achieved a degree of consistency in that its sheer tastelessness was compatible with the subject of the thread... Best, Alistair

There are those who say Eurovision has no class, Alistair. I contend that Eurovision has class it has never used

Thought I'd mention here that Terry Wogan (BBC Radio 2) this morning played the Intermezzo from the Karelia Suite as performed by the Helsinki Radio Symphony Orchestra !!!!! !!!!! Don't expect a regular classical spot though, it's only because he's in Finland for the Eurovision. John W

I wonder if he will play the orchestral prelude to Sallinnen's THE KING GOES FORTH TO FRANCE tomorrow, then? ;-)

So, Slovenia won it Bring back Clodagh Rogers, I say. I've just seen her on the tele, wearing a glittery pair of hot pants

So, Slovenia won it Y'what? The BBC News page says Serbia won it: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/6650599.stmUkraine second, Russia third - an Eastern Europe clean sweep :-) What a terrifying thought that is Congrats to the Serbians, though - they have felt locked-out of the rest of Europe for some little while now, and perhaps if Eurovision does have any point at all, it will help to bring them back on-side a bit with their neighbours?
