The introduction of the "Arts Other Than Music" board, with its clear categories, has elicited comments from members who have found items that they had hitherto missed: the clear labelling helps navigation. It may well be that there are other sections of the board which might benefit from similar clarification, and one that seems obvious concerns R.I.P. threads.  At the moment these crop up all over the place, but it would be very easy for us to create a child board in the "News and Current Affairs" section specifically for the purpose.

Rather than just spring it on members, however, we should keep things as open as possible by letting you decide. Hence this poll. If it is what most of you would like, then it would be quite possible to archive all the existing R.I.P. posts there, too.

Voting will stay open for the next seven days.

The third option is the best one, I think. Smiley

On consideration, I agree.

Incidentally, those who like to keep an eye on the obituaries might be interested in the list musician obits that I maintain for work - it can be found here:

(Additions that I have missed are always welcome!)

Fourthed!

I will not remain anonymous on this topic!

EDIT: I want to change my vote to 'no separate thread, no changes' - except a change of mind.

I prefer the tended and visited graveyard of Option 2 to the lock-death-away-out-of-sight version of Option 3, personally - and voted accordingly.

I don't think it will be like that at all, Rei: with option three, there'd be a child board for N&CA, which when clicked on would display the normal index of existing posts in reverse chronological order, in exactly the same way as all the other thread indices. Everyone would know exactly where to post new entries, and also find the existing ones, which isn't always so easy at the moment.....

Me too Reiner, I also voted accordingly!

The intention of offering an Obituary thread was not to 'lock-death-away-out-of-sight, but very much the opposite. Members have clearly felt moved in the past to note the passing of someone who has contributed to the Arts in whichever capacity and, as a result, have drawn their passing to the attention of the MB. It seems to make sense to provide a dedicated board for that purpose and gather those past Obituaries, that people have taken the trouble to post as a mark of respect, together.

It is only a suggestion of course, hence the Poll.

Again, A, I can't see how it can be 'lock death out of sight'. Under Option 2, all new obits would be kept neatly together, whilst any that were posted previously would still be scattered to the four corners of the board: under Option 3, the sole difference would be that the site would contain all the past obits that we could find as well as the new ones. In other words, Reiner's 'tended and visited graveyard' would only contain future obits: anyone who had the misfortune to depart before the arbitrary date of the changeover would still be tucked away in the middle of nowhere. Option 3 means rather more work for us, but a more consistent outcome.

I voted for option 3 because I think it is more logical.  Not everyone reads every thread and I certainly know I have missed some obits.  I did think the subject of a dedicated thread was originally raised some months ago by Mort but without much of a response?  Anyway, although only 18 have voted so far option 3 seems to be the clear favourite.

Whilst on the subject of polls, I think it a very good idea to ask Members whether they agree or not on MB changes

I'm open to persuasion on this point by the very fair rationale Mort and Ron have put forward for Option 3, in fact - and I would not oppose Option 3 if it went ahead.  I agree the present version is untidy and not everyone may have found obits in which they may have had personal interest.  As long as it doesn't become a "Births, Marriages & Deaths" section located after the Bankruptcy Notices and Planning Permission Applications Wink

Perhaps because of my own philsophical inclinations I am inclined to see obits as a celebration of the good someone did, and death as a release from the suffering of illness with which most are afflicted before they die - so my approach to obituaries (for example to Solzhenitsyn's of late - a man paralysed by illness and bedridden for five years) is maybe not so tinged with sadness as it may be for others Smiley

Couldn't agree with you more, Reiner. We can miss those who have left us whilst celebrating  and acknowledging what they have brought into our lives.
