Just heard Liszt, orchestrated by an unknown hand (recorded from a record I borrowed 15 years ago!) - Hexameron and a lot of Alkan over dinner (played by the excellent Jack Gibbons - he doesn't seem to play Alkan any more, perhaps it is something to do with his car accident several years ago?)

Maconchy 4tets 9-13 (overdose?). I was possibly feeling guilty that I hadn't got round to the final disc of 3 in the amazingly cheap Regis box-set of the complete 4tets, and a tiny bit re-inspired to do so by the two CotW programmes I've caught so far this week.

Well I'm actually listening to 'Where's the Skill in That' a.k.a. Mixing It. But before that, it was Deep River - Joanna MacGregor & Andy Sheppard. First heard on Later Junction. Superb...

Last night: works by Germaine Tailleferre (see dedicated thread). After that String Quartets by John McCabe (3,4,5 - Vanbrugh Quartet, Hyperion CDA 67078). Bravo FMJ, had intended to do more Maconchy at your instigation, but these were sitting alongside, and I fancied a change. Also the NMC recording of Hugh Wood's Symphony, yet another British symphony that we need to add to the list....

Elektra.  Solti, Nilsson, Vienna, etc.  (There was some discussion on one thread or another about performative difficulty, and another one about David Del Tredici, and Strauss's name kept coming up, and, as luck would have it, this disc arrived in the mail today from caiman ....)

Quite stunning.  And rather frightening.

(I still say this doesn't have a lick to do w/ the likes of Del Tredici, but that's for another day.)

I have just acquired the Missa L'homme armé. Comparing it with the Machaut ditto - and I see there's an Ockeghem version too. I shall try to distinguish the different styles - which will be hopelessly beyond me. Any help from you or anyone will be greatly appreciated.

Lately:

Alvin Lucier solo works for cello/clarinet + purewave -- Anthony Burr and Charles Curtis on Sigma ed.

Works by Roger Redgate, Wolfram Schurig, Julio Estrada's Chamber Music for Strings.

Derek Bailey duo w/Maarten Altena as documented on Pisa 1980 improvisers symposium: incredible stuff!

Wow. Well, really Baz is your man for this, but let's start a new thread in the Early Music Show tomorrow.
I'll see if I can grab some armed men from my library and we can see what we can see!

Nice.
You have a really good CD collection xyzzz_
I've been listening to Radio Wandelweiser all evening on your recommendation. Currently listening to Michel Pisaro's entre-moments constellations (7), which I think has been my favourite so far.

Talking of Missa L'homme Armé, I took part in a performance of Karl Jenkins' The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace earlier this month. A few people came up to me raving about the piece; they couldn't praise it highly enough. I didn't have the heart to argue with them and I know his music divided opinion on the old R3 MB so I just mumbled something about its having popular appeal.

Don't worry Tony, you're with friends now, you can tell us these things without fear.....

My stepfather conducted it a few months ago, and it was extremely well received by singers & congregation.  Not really my cup of tea, but it does seem to be a real winner in a lot of circles.

Thanks - its a bit mis-leading bcz I exclude some of the songs, or whatever else I'm into right now that isn't a strictly radio 3 matter.

Aaron gave the link to the station - I know of it but haven't gotten round to that..
