Silvestrov: Diptychon

I first heard this emanating spookily from headphones in the early hours of a late-2005 Sunday morning, and it made a real impression. Haven't been able to track it down before now, it's good to hear again. Doesn't quite go with blossom on the trees outside, though. I also have quite a liking for Requiem for Larissa.

Thanks to a tip-off from martle:

OMFG.

To say there's no voice (or for that matter piece) like it hardly does it justice. Live recording from 22 April 1969, it says, which I think would make it the premiere. The audio quality isn't up to much but that's hardly the point. Also some improvisations to round things off in an appropriately horrifying manner.

Available here.

Thanks so much for that link, Ollie. I was there. It will be good to hear it again.

I am unworthy to be recipient of your thanks, Bryn - that honour goes to the Green One. Smiley

Oops, done it again.

So, Martle, (or should that be M4RTL?), I tried ordering but keep getting the message "The recipient of this shopping cart link is not an approved shopping cart user. Please review your selection and try again.

Trying again and again makes no difference. I have had a PayPal account for a couple of years now. I have dropped Roy Hart a note about the problem. Hopefully he can resolve it.

NS here - a bit of gorgeous indulgent late romanticism:

Great sound and playing too.

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

Well, yes, that's the address I used, Ollie. Not the easiest site to buy from. Wink

Nor the cheapest. €20 for a fairly short CD. Even with postage included, that's a bit hefty with today's exchange rate.

...and indeed what arrived chez Ollie certainly bore all the hallmarks of homemadeness. But hey, where else are you going to find it?

My first attempts to pay via paypal went somewhere else entirely. Watch out for that too... Wink

...and I haven't even attampted to order my copy yet; but the university department I work in owns a very, very ancient LP of it, I think.

It does beg the question of whether this/a piece of this nature can be successfully realised without the rather, erm, singular performer and his singular techniques for whom it was written...

Well, there is this:

but I have not heard it, and want to 'relive' that Hart performance anyway.

I think the commercial recording with Julius Eastman shows quite well that it can still come off. On the other hand there's something rather special about not just Hart's command of the techniques (Eastman's multiphonics and altissimo are pretty special but they're not really the same kind of thing - there's identifiable harmony in Hart's 'vocal chords' Wink) but his vocal presence.

I see that the commercial recording was made in 1970 when Roy Hart was still alive and performing. I assume there's a story there?

I've had an email back from Paul in which he simply provides the the very link I am having trouble with and suggest I follow the instruction, which I do, up to the point where Pay Pal tells me "The recipient of this shopping cart link is not an approved shopping cart user. Please review your selection and try again.", again.

I have asked that he investigates the problem and advises on a solution.
