Well, I wouldn't write this music off until you've given it at least a listen.

I'm listening on headphones so I don't disturb the neighbours but that might be a bad idea since they're probably hearing my very frequent gasps of shock and delight anyway.

I've just ordered that. Hahahahahaha!

How come a yank gets to glean the most plaudits for RVW symphonies, then? I mean, what if he was Hungarian. What then?

So have you started with the 6th, Oz? In which case there are further delights to come: it's not the strongpoint of his cycle. (And on the 6 front, have I still to introduce you to Abravanel, Berglund and the live Barbirolli? If Previn 6 = cripes, then I'd start digging for further superlatives now, if I were you.)

Ron, no you haven't. Cripes!  Smiley

IMO you'll need those superlatives for Nos 2, 5 and 9 as well as 3.

That's about two fewer glasses of bubbly at the Champagne Bar tomorrow, then.

Pleasure to be here, Bryn.  Cool

I'm afraid though that having for the moment needed a little extra wattage from the 4th I've got one down from the shelf that I bought a little while back but hadn't found the time and mood for until now. And it's just the ticket.

I think Ron at least (and probably many others) can probably guess which one it might be...

So the (Vaughan Williams) Pastoral has just come to an end. It's a very fine thing. (The piece, not the fact that it's come to an end.)

Extraordinary playing again although I could have done with a bit less vibrato in the string solos - all the other solos (and for that matter tuttis) float along gorgeously. Surprised to read that it's Anthony Halstead playing the horn solos. Even more surprised to read no credit for the trumpet solo or for that matter any information on recording dates, locations and personnel... naughty RCA.

Quite a record, that...
The lack of info in the VW Previn box is really irritating - but according to Philip Stuart's LSO discography (downloadable online) it's 6-9 January 1971 and they did the Third and Ninth in the same sessions.

I'm not certain about the trumpet but I think it was probably Howard Snell.
