That's a mighty haul, opi! I've got the Ančerl Janįček/ Martinů disc and it's super....funnily enough, it's been sitting here by the PC for the last couple of days ready for another spin. Do let us know what the Brouček's like...my itchy credit card has been firmly tucked away as far as CD purchases are concerned this year so far, but I could be persuaded to give it some exercise.  Wink

Haven't listened to it yet. IIRC, I enjoyed the performance when I first heard it (a recording of the concert), but on later listening found it rather less engaging - it just doesn't have Mackerras's edge, vigour or sheer command of the idiom. Most of the cast also featured in a production conducted by Mackerras at the Prague National Theatre a couple of years ago, and I have a composite recording from those performances which is very involving. But I thought I should have the Bělolhlįvek too!

Have been hoping that Chandos might at least be persuaded to issue one of Mackerras's ENO performances at some point. As they're reported to be putting out a Goodall Mastersingers, am hopeful for an English Brouček.

IGI,

You're doing very well indeed! I lasted until a few days ago (not that I'd actually set myself your target), but my game now is finding things for under £5 - it can be done!

Keep us posted, Ron. My musical credit card activities are going to be severely curtailed for the next few months Cry And I have a little list. Well, not so little come to think of it ... Roll Eyes

Having said which ... it's a lot better than my repeat listenings to the broadcast suggested. The only passages where I feel really short-changed are the openings to each part: the beginning's missing a certain sparkle and wit, and feels under-tempo; and disc 2 (the beginning of the Fifteenth-Century Excursion) should surely have the claws dug in a bit more.

But otherwise, the performance comes up marvellously. Excellent sound, a wonderful, experienced cast, superb orchestral playing (the contrabassoon particularly good!) and choral singing too. Bělohlįvek's speeds - generally a little slower than I'm used to - bring out a lot of the textural beauty and detail in what is surely one of Janacek's most gloriously scored operas. No wonder the audience enjoyed it!

Should members add this to their itchy credit card list? Yeah, go on! Cheesy

The DG Mr Brouček is on its way, opi!

Thanks to a member here alerting me to a SWTrains offer on Pigsback.com recently, I've managed to earn a £50 CDWow voucher. Therefore, I've just spent the grand total of £1.99 on the following haul:

+ Korngold - 4CD set of orchestral stuff from CPO (this is the only image I could find)

I must be one of the few here not to have got the Stravinsky set last year, Ron's posts at TOP have encouraged me to get the RVW and I came across the CPO Korngold set by chance!

My credit card doesn't itch.
It weeps quietly but when I take it out of my wallet it starts to sob.
(Sorry - it's that time of the month when I have no more money left anymore...)

Surely shome mishtake, but the thought of the "Good Moaning" possibilities engendered here are just too bizarre to ignore. "Lissen vairee cairfoolee, Ah shell sai zis ernlee wernce". Chromium K meets the fallen Madonna mit de big boobies? Tochter aus Elysium!

No - that's me too despite the fact that my dad took great pains to point it out to me as well.
I'll be checking my bank balance and seeing if it's a possibility this month.
I've been trying very hard not to think about the Nųrgård symphony recordings. I really enjoyed the sixth and quite like the third (IIRC) but again, it's a money thing. Sad

This looks interesting:

Schubert's Arpeggione sonata, (with Paul Badura-Skoda on a Graf fortepiano), and the Quintet, D956, with arpeggione in place of 'cello. I think I will wait until the price drops, but I am rather tempted.

NOT LOOKING!
NOT LOOKING!
If I keep my hands firmly over my eyes and whistle furiously while clicking the back button I will make it out of here alive (or at least solvent).
