Dukas: Ariane et Barbe-Bleu

Features the in form opera band BBC Symphony Orchestra.

Heard this anyone ?

No, Alison, but I also spotted it in the listings and managed to snap up a ridiculously cheap copy from the US. Botstein's previous Telarc recordings have been very good - Chausson's Le Roi Arthus and Strauss' Die Liebe der Danae - so I have high hopes for this one.

Oh dear. Just spotted this one to be released on 1 October:

Now, whilst I didn't much care for the 'Jupiter' Symphony conducted by René Jacobs on CDR the other week, I have very much enjoyed his opera recordings of Le Nozze and Così fan tutte. I notice that for this Don Giovanni, like the release of La Clemenza last year, the orchestra are the Freiberg Baroque.

Here's something else which the French are getting ahead of the UK.

The latest batch of DG's Collectors Edition (I'm sure there should be an apostrophe in there) sets of Bernstein's work has just come out, and arrived this morning. They include a box containing Tchaikovsky's 4th-6th symphonies, a box of late Mozart (which, judging from his Vienna disc of the 40th and 41st symphonies, long a favourite of mine, should be good) and another Beethoven box to complement the Vienna symphony cycle which includes the too long out of catalogue Amnesty concert. Now if only it wasn't festival time I might have a second to listen to them.

Also waiting for me when I returned home this evening was the new Gramophone. Once again the adverts were more interesting than anything else (I'm still not sure why I haven't cancelled my subscription). Monday will bring us the final release in Alsop's LPO Brahms series. I've very much enjoyed the first two, though found the third a little disappointing. We're also getting the third (and penultimate) volume of Paul Lewis's Beethoven sonatas (though the advert doesn't give a release date and Gramophone's listings are now utterly useless in this regard).

Now that is mighty tempting, Mr Dough. Quite a line-up of the Russian greats in live recordings. Don't you just love Brilliant Classics?!

Yes, but it's me who gets charged!  Wink

Not yet, IGI! It's been ordered from hmv.co.uk and, as the release date they give was yesterday, am hoping it will arrive soon!  Undecided

Same here. HMV are often slow off the mark to deliver new releases. Handley's Bantock is similarly 'on order' somewhere.

Picked it up a couple of weeks ago but things have been so busy here with the festival and all that I haven't actually had a chance for a proper listen.

Alison,

In point of fact, I'm not sure it is out unless, that is, you live in Edinburgh. McAlister Matheson (the excellent classical shop just round the corner from the Usher Hall) has had it since the start of the festival (on 10th August), doubtless Hyperion were anxious to cash in on last year's satisfied punters. I believe general release may not be until September.

For what it's worth, they have cut any applause (at least on the one or two I've briefly listened to) and put them in numerical order rather than concert order.

Yes, Tam. In the article in The Herald (Mackerras in Vienna thread) it said that the cycle was being released early in Edinburgh. It went on general release elsewhere on Monday. I've now had an email from HMV to tell me it's on its way, along with the Bantock, but they normally take a few days to make the trip!

Spot the difference:

Amazon France

Amazon UK

I do hope the UK CD count is based on an early mock-up of the box, rather than reflacting a less attractive deal.

Turns out there are indeed two different sets from Brilliant Classics. One has 'just' the complete works, and the other has an addittional 15 CDa of historical recordings:

85 CD set

and

100 CD set

respectively.

Amazon UK are currently only promoting advance orders for the former, and Amazon France the latter. ;-)

Oh, and taking the cost of p&p from Amazon France to the UK into account, the two sets cost around the same amount (about £60). So the French option looks to be the better, even when taking free delivery by Amazon UK into consideration.
