The passion shown by viewers in the wake of this year's Young Musician of the Year competition on television has resulted in a petition :

http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/youngmusician/

Encourage as many people as possible to join. Let's get some answers.

That looks like astute work on somebody's part, Tommy: thanks for drawing our attention to it.

I'm sure I'll not have to beg most members to add their names, but would ask that we all also mention it to friends and colleagues with musical interests - students, fellow orchestra and choir members, etc; for this to work, they'll need as many signatures as possible.

Och I forgot

aaaaarggh I've done it again

Anyway folks, I recommend we all sign the petition, it could make a difference and start a change at the BBC, get them to remember what their priorities should be.

Well, I think I signed it but there didn't seem to be any way out of the site without a compulsory contribution and I don't have a paypal account, nor am I willing to open one for this purpose.  I did get to the point where it said my signature had been recorded, so I presume it has, but I'm afraid the only way I could find to get out was by closing the window.

It's all grist to the mill, of course, but I'm not sure a petition like this actually is better than an avalanche of individual complaints.  Which reminds me, I must get on with revising my follow-up complaint (the one in response to their pathetic reply) and forwarding it by a method the BBC will accept.

I've just got back from a concert featuring a work by the outgoing YMotY and I was tempted to bother him for his views on the matter but I thought better of it.  It might have ruined his evening!

The signature is recorded without having to pay any donation. You can confirm this by clicking on the link again and going to the "signatures" tab on the front page of the petition. It may not do much good but it all adds to the volume of discontent about this topic.

Not sure I know what you mean HtoHe. I just signed and it simply asked me if I wanted to donate. I didn't, so simply navigated away from the page.

I hope your post doesn't put people off signing, since it appears to have been a problem that was only experience by you!

best,

Strange - I wasn't even asked to donate.

Surely one advantage of a unified petition is that there's a record of exactly how many people feel strongly enough to have their complaints on record. With all the various smatterings of dissent so far, it's very difficult to see whether it's just a minority moan or the tip of the iceberg of dissatisfaction. I'd imagine that if there were a sizeable number of complaints registered, it would become much more difficult for the BBC board to ignore it: hasn't the standard retort to adverse comments about the R3 shake-up been along the lines of "....We're not aware of that many complaints"?

I can't see anything to lose by signing it, whereas I can see a very possible gain - if enough people will put their names down.

I wouldn't want to put anyone off, either, Tommy.  The problem is, as you suggest, probably with me and my limited knowledge of these procedures.  I'm used to 'clicking through' and on many sites I use navigating away without completing the process would invalidate the whole transaction.  When I said 'compulsory donation' I meant there didn't seem to be any active option to decline, such as a 'no thanks' or '$0' option.

Anyway, I've returned to say that I got my confirmation email so obviously the signature was recorded.  Apologies if I confused anyone.

I wasn't asked to donate, but I forgot to untick the box about receiving other ipetitions stuff so maybe that's the difference, and I'll be getting a donations e-mail; just a thought.

P.S. on the signatures list, nos. 32 & 33 are my missus, she sent it twice by mistake Cheesy

A [bump] for this.

There are plenty of names from the board that I recognise, but even allowing for the anonymous entries it seems to me that there are several members who recorded their displeasure on the thread here, but who have yet to sign up. If the erosion and trivialisation of the BBC's arts coverage means anything to you at all, this might just be a way of starting the turning of the tide.

You find the petition here:

Thank you
