Something a little different – these four composers are connected by a fifth. Find a composition by each of these four and a word from each title should lead you to another composition by a fifth composer. Clues/ alternative composer quartets may be added later if needed.

Glazunov
Stockhausen
Korngold
Sibelius

Good luck!

Clue No.1 – from the title, you might have expected the Glazunov work to have been written by Sibelius!  Wink

OK - lets go for Glazunov - Karelian Legend, Korngold - Elizabeth and Essex, Sibelius  - Praise thy holy name on high

I'm aiming for Liszt - Legend of the Holy Elizabeth

A good start, roslynmuse - the Glazunov is correct.

An alternative for the Sibelius would be a piece by Schubert.

Glazunov – Karelian Legend
Stockhausen
Korngold
Sibelius/ Schubert

Hi Rosylnmuse,
The Legend of Saint Elisabeth is well worth a listen - I bought the vocal score in a secondhand music shop in York ages ago and played it through and it's great.  Three pieces were also published in solo arrangements by Liszt - (see Hyperion, complete piano music, volume 14) and also four pieces were published as piano duet versions (see Phoenix PH03914, not available in the UK - WHY?Huh  Angry  ) and then we listened to the orchestral version (on Hungaroton HCD 12694-96) over Christmas and it's most interesting!

Another alternative for Sibelius would be Enrique Granados:

Glazunov – Karelian Legend
Stockhausen
Korngold
Sibelius / Schubert/ Granados

Listening to Deryck Cooke's interesting working-out of Mahler's sketches of the 10th Symphony, its funny the music contained in the Finale makes me cry, but Mahler's 4th symphony doesnt make me cry at all,  Cooke captured the Mahler sound in places, thats the sound you can here in the 9th and Das Lied Von der Erde, the sound that makes you emotional

As we've not got further than the Glazunov, I've identified a few alternative composers whose works will give you the necessary clues to find the 'hidden' work:

Glazunov – Karelian Legend
Stockhausen / Saint-Saëns
Korngold / Weill
Sibelius / Schubert/ Granados

Remember, you need to find a composition by each and a word from each title should lead you to another composition by a fifth composer. The Granados should be a big clue...think of a vocal work!  Wink
