Interesting that my first thought for 'dreams' and 'Elgar' was Dream Children rather than Gerontius! Well, me too actually - but I changed it to G in posting Tommo

Perhaps I was reminded of this too... which I read up in the Malverns a couple of years ago.

Are we talking Saints?:
George (Banner of) - Elgar; Francis of Assisi - Messiaen, Sebastian (Martyrdom of) - Debussy; Paul - Mendelssohn; Nicholas - Britten; Ludmilla - Dvorak; Francis again, twice over - Liszt; The Saint of Bleecker St - Menotti (obscure! - thanks, Wikipedia!)

Fantastic, roslynmuse! A belated glass of I think it's Reiner who has a high opinion of The Saint of Bleecker Street and from the synopsis in Kobbé’s, it certainly sounds interesting.

I suppose Lalo's Symphonie espagnole led you to that, t-p, but that would be too obvious for the Inquisition! No, not Spain.

How do you know Napravnik? His music was played some times on the radio. I knew his name very well, though I can not recall what was played. Is it his music to Don Juan you are looking for?

I know very little about Nápravník or his music, other than the fact he was Czech by birth and moved to Russia in his early twenties, becoming chief conductor at the Mariinsky/ Kirov and so worked closely with the 'Mighty Handful' and Tchaikovsky. He gave the first performances of Boris Godunov in 1874, five operas by Peter Tchaikovsky, including The Maid of Orleans, Mazeppa, and The Queen of Spades, and five by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, including May Night, The Snow Maiden, and Christmas Eve. I know his Concerto symphonique in A minor but little else.
No, there's no Don Juan connection.
