I don't know of Taneyev's Piano Concerto at all. What's it like, Jonathan? I know a couple of the symphonies and whilst there's some attractive stuff there, it's a bit run-of-the-mill at times, especially when compared to Glazunov and Tchaikovsky. The Hyperion series of Romantic Piano Concertos contains some real surprises - the Rimsky-Korsakov/ Balakirev disc is lovely, as are the Litolff, Glazunov and Saint-Saëns. My favourite is the Lyapunov  - what glorious melodies. I've recently ordered the Alnaes/Sinding disc and am tempted by the Scharwenka too.

Get the Scharwenka - probably my favourite neglected composer piano concerto.  As for the Taneyev, I'll have to give it a proper listen, I've had the disc for at least a month and not yet listened to it!  I agree about the Hyperion CDs, I have many of them and they are almost all, without fail, excellent (the Alkan / Henselt one is superb, as are the Glazunov / Goedicke, Lyapunov and the Brull ones).  While I'm here, try Taneyev's 4th Symphony on Chandos - it's excellent stuff and well worth a listen.  I like the Sinding / Alneas disc as well.

At the risk of splitting this thread, I have a musical connection:

Mendelssohn,
Raff,
Meyerbeer and
Nickolai

and which composer links them all?

(but answer the other one first!)

No, not woods. The Elgar is choral, the Krenek for solo piano, Lumbye is not a waltz or polka, Dowland's is for lute and Sondheim is a work for musical theatre.

Jonathan, I have that Taneyev 2 and 4. I see the 1st and 3rd symphonies have just been released, Chandos trumpeting the fact that they're very rare and finally available on CD...they recorded it three years ago! Why has it taken so long? I find their treatment/ promotion of Valeri Polyansky a bit odd; their Glazunov cycle is incomplete, only the 7th to go. When I contacted them about the prospects, they replied that they have no plans to record it. How odd? BIS have launched and completed a cycle with Otaka, and even Warner have started a cycle with Serebrier, which could well be completed before Chandos get around to finishing theirs.

Oh I'm going to be annoying and just chip in before personal pumpkin time. But the Sondheim is Sunday in the Park with George (not Garnett). Right? So Georges or Parks?

Duh... night all!

I admit I had to Google:

Lumbye - King George I's March of Honour
Dowland - George Whitehead's Almand
Krenek - George Washington Variations
