Well, the only other subtitled Haydn symphony in the 80s is No.84, which is sometimes named as 'In Nomine Domini'.

Is that the one that's the Letter V?

So are we looking for letters?

Tchaikovsky - Tatyana's Letter Scene from Eugene Onegin
Josef Strauss - Eingesendet ('Letters to the Editor') polka
Copland - Letter from Home
Carter - A 6 Letter Letter for solo oboe
Rachmaninov - Letter to K. S. Stanislavsky
Prokofiev - Letter to Zakharov

Kalinnikov - Letter to Kruglikov

Rather a tricky one, that!  Cheesy

Why is Haydn's No.88 sometimes known as the Letter 'V'?

The letter V is apparently something to do with the catalogue of the Philharmonic Society of London

Smiley maybe why I thought it was a 'London' symphony, though I have it on a CD with the 'Oxford' which isn't a 'London' either, performed in Oxford 3 years after composed, it's getting late.

Thanks and

Birtwistle
Martinů
Maxwell Davies
Elliott Carter

Had to search for these, in some dark places,

Birtwistle - Shadow of Night
Martinů - Stin (The Shadow, ballet)
Maxwell Davies - Image, Reflection, Shadow
Elliott Carter - Of Rewaking - third song is Shadows

so link is Shadows?

No, not shadows, but it's not too wide of the mark, in a mysterious way...

You're not looking for a common word in each title, but there is a very clear connection that links the four together.

No sleeping involved, and not night either.

 Embarrassed

Elliot Carter: THE MINOTAUR
Maxwell Davies: NAXOS QUARTETS
Martinu: ARIADNE
Birtwistle: ? (not ORPHEUS, surely)
