A wild stab - dance/ballet? Verdi - I Vespri Siciliani (The Four Seasons) Strauss - Salome (Dance of the Seven Veils) Ponchielli - La Gioconda (Dance of the Hours) Wagner - Tannhauser (Venusberg ballet) Salome the odd one out because it's performed by a member of the singing cast, not the ballet company?

Morning, IGI! Not ballet. GIOCONDA is of course correct. The Verdi is SO close to your personage! The Wagner isn't as early as TANNHAUSER. The Strauss IS a familiar opera, but only occasionally revived (clue: to the best of my knowledge, you haven't yet heard or seen it, unless you did yesterday! ). Off for a swim and be back before midday to check your answers.

We're looking for a character in each opera (one being the odd one out). The Ponchielli and Verdi are female roles, the two others men. Let's name the works first, and then move on to the characters.
PS For an obvious reason, IGI should know the Verdi!

The Wagner man has two wives who appear as characters. The third wife ( ) is nowhere to be seen on the stage.

The Strauss man appears in a work whose title doesn't include a proper noun, though it (the title) refers to its TWO heroines.

I think the Wagnerian character is Wotan and the Ponchielli is La Cieca.

I think the Strauss could be one of Barak's brothers in 'Die Frau ohne Schatten'.

Eboli sometimes wears an eye-patch. Indeed, the historical Eboli did. So I think Wotan, Eboli and Barak's brother all have just the one eye, whereas La Cieca in La Gioconda is blind!

Well done! Have you ever seen an Eboli with an eye patch? Bumbry has one in the Met DVD.

I don't think Waltraud Meier wore one in the ROH/ Pappano production, nor Violeta Urmana on the Willy Decker/ Chailly Netherlands DVD.
New connection - non-operatic, but there is an odd one out:
Grieg Bartok Rachmaninov Gurney
