Now I long to hear Christoff's heartbreaking Quixote in Massenet's opera (in Italian!). Night, IGI and all!

That's the one. The death scene is no less moving than the famous version sung by Chaliapin.

PS I'll tell you tomorrow about the Christoff/Fenice DON CARLO (1969), which has arrived today (I heard it in one go!).

At £4.40, I think I'll snap it up! Cheers.

Look forward to it. When I have time, I'll post more on the Ring thread about the Rheingold which arrived yesterday.

Good night.

A new connection to puzzle out. There is not a common word link here, but the titles should lead to a connection to a mystery composer. Here are your first four composers:

Offenbach
Tchaikovsky
Rimsky-Korsakov
Liszt

Non to the Offenbach.

There are actually two Tchaikovsky pieces which would qualify.

Is the answer Mozart?

Offenbach's Tales of Hoffman is set during a performance of Don Giovanni
Tchaikovsky wrote his Variations on a Rococo Theme on a theme of Mozart
Rimsky-Korsakov's opera Mozart and Salieri
Liszt's Reminiscences de Don Juan

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

And isn't the ball scene music in the QUEEN Mozartian?  Wink

Good effort, PW, with the Mozart, but 'no deal' I'm afraid. Our mystery composer is more recent than WAM.

One of the Tchaikovsky's is operatifc, the other balletic... Wink
