It will go out of copyright in 2009, when we can enjoy it for less than a tenner!

I believe strongly that the relevant law here will be changed soon. Lonnie Donegan's widow has been complaining recently that she is no longer being paid for someone else's song that he recorded once 50 years ago. Very few people are getting excited about that but when it comes to Elvis Presley and The Beatles, you can be sure that big business will have something to say about it.

I fear you could be right, Tony, although The Beatles were involved in something recently to allow their music to be sold on iTunes, which seemed to be a bit of a breakthrough. What I find particularly annoying, in the case of EMI re Callas, or Decca re Pavarotti, is that until very recently when the 50 year copyright loomed ever closer, they refused to issue their complete opera recordings for anything less than full price. The Callas Gioconda recording reissued today is, I think, the first time that this recording, which is now 48 years old, has appeared at mid or budget price. If the copyright wasn't about to run out, would this have appeared at its new price today?

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Parsifal has given us a full peal of bells:

Khachaturian: Symphony No.2 The Bell
Delibes: The Bell Song (from Lakmé)
Dvorak: The Bells of Zlonice
Rachmaninov: The Bells

I believe strongly that copyright should expire after 50 years, if not sooner. And the 70 years after death for authors and composers is too long. Look at the acclaim the Keilberth Ring received when at last someone could release it because the legal arguments no longer applied.

IGI - the Beatles thing with iTunes wasn't to do with copyright, it was related to a trademark dispute over Apple (their record label) and Apple (the computer people); until very recently (and I'd have to check to see how it got resolved), the Beatles' management refused to allow iTunes to sell their music.

I'm with Tony on - 50 years for performers is plenty of time (lifetime plus 70 years is more than enough for composers).

(Apologies for being off-topic - I'm a bit of a copyright nerd... Roll Eyes)

Nothing to do with times of day, but Prokofiev's Romeo & Juliet is correct!    Cheesy

Here's an extra composer too:

Prokofiev – Romeo and Juliet
Bliss
Elgar

The Strauss is not operatic.

Nice try, Tommo, but not police code words.

No. Time for some clues: the Strauss, although orchestral, does have an operatic cousin by a French composer.
Watch out for a blissful ballet.  Wink
