Yes - Tchaikovsky's is incidental music, but contains some engaging music, especially the well known Dance of the Tumblers.

That leaves Ives, which is a song containing a certain month... Wink

Note that all the R-K works are of a certain genre.

Ives may have composed a 'May' song (R-K = May Night).

He did...a bit of a connection to the Snow Maiden, really!

Bax – Christmas Eve (Christmas Eve)
Ives - Night of Frost in May (May Night)
Nielsen - Maskarade - Dance of the Cockerels (The Golden Cockerel)
Tchaikovsky – Snow Maiden (Snegurochka/ Snow Maiden)
Saint-Saëns - Une flûte invisible (Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh)
Smetana – The Bartered Bride (The Tsar’s Bride)

Well persevered!

Do you know Rimsky's operas? I have all of these six. We had a good discussion on them here: http://www.for3.org/forums/showthread.php?t=64 as well as some that ended up on its Waffle Thread!

Yes, I have the Gergiev R-K recordings!

Re the Fabritiis MEFISTO: I'd also ordered a copy a few days ago, together with the Bartoletti GIOCONDA!

Re Siepi's Mefisto: did he perform the whistles himself?  Tongue

A lot of those Decca/ Phillips reissues are quite tempting.

Re Siepi, I don't know. I'd like to think he did!

I do wish Gergiev would record The Golden Cockerel, but I doubt he'd get Philips to commit to it financially.

Try connecting these four. The link is thematic rather than a common word from the titles.

Verdi
Mendelssohn
Donizetti
Honegger

Verdi: GIOVANNA D'ARCO, TROVATORE and DON CARLO
Honegger: JOAN OF ARC AT THE STAKE
Donizetti: DOM SEBASTIEN
Mendelssohn: ?

No stakes, inquisitions or thumb-screws (other than from the quiz-master!!)

Verdi and Donizetti are operas, but the others are not.

Is there a Scottish theme?

Donizetti - Lucia di Lammermoor
Verdi - Macbeth
Mendelssohn - Scottish Symphony

There's nae Scottish link. There are actually two Verdi operas which would qualify. A fifth composer is Franz Schmidt.
