No. The Honegger links to one of Hugo's great novels.

Incidentally, I'm hearing LA GIOCONDA today (Cerquetti and Callas!), having read Hugo's ANGELO a few months ago, a great play (in my opinion).

Yes. Honegger wrote music for a film of Les Misérables.

So, a line-up of Hugo inspired works:

Verdi – Ernani(Hernani)  or Rigoletto (Le roi s'amuse)
Honegger – Les Misérables
Mendelssohn – Ruy Blas
Donizetti – Lucrezia Borgia
Schmidt – Notre Dame (Notre-Dame de Paris)

I wish! No, of course, two different recordings! I don't know the EMI Callas (only the Cetra): is it good? She once said that if people would like know what she was all about, they should hear this recording, notably the final act.

Never been a massive Callas fan. I think the only complete opera I have of hers is the famous Tosca recording. Now that EMI will have to reissue them at sensible prices, or they become available on other budget labels, I might investigate, but I have to confess that EMI's cast lists aren't half as inviting as Decca could boast at the time! That Decca Cerquetti Gioconda - wow! Cerquetti, Simionato, del Monaco, Bastianini, Siepi...show me a modern-day line-up that could rival that!!

Is this the Gioconda cast on the Cetra?

Maria Callas (La Gioconda), Fedora Barbieri (Laura Adorno), Giulio Neri (Alvise Badoero), Maria Amadini (La Cieca), Gianni Poggi (Enzo Grimaldo), Paolo Silveri (Barnaba), Piero Poldi (Zuane), Armando Benzi (Isepo)
Orchestra Sinfonico e Coro di Torino della RAI, Antonio Votto (conductor)

I see Classical Music Mobile have it for €1.  Smiley

Yes, that's the Cetra. The EMI has a young Cappuccilli as Barnaba, Cossotto as Laura, and Vinco as Alvise.

It will go out of copyright in 2009, when we can enjoy it for less than a tenner!

I like the look of the rest of the cast, although I don't know the tenor. I see EMI have just reissued it!

An easy one:

Khachaturian
Delibes
Dvorak
Rachmaninov

They've reissued it only today: I'm sure it wasn't there yesterday! 15.99 isn't really bad, even without a libretto. Now, your new quartet...
