A brass competition? Severn Suite? Moorside Suite? Downland Suite? Prometheus Unbound?

Well, the Elgar was written as a test-piece to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the National Brass Band Championships in 1930, so I assume the others were written for this competition too.

Just checked - they were all test pieces in:

Holst - 1928
Elgar - 1930
Bantock - 1933
Ireland - A Downland Suite (1932) and also Comedy Overture (1934)

An adendem to the above. Thed competition will be taking place in the Royal Alberet tomorrow, starting at 10am and probably finishing around 4.10.pm. 20 bands will be taking part. defending champions Grimethorpe Colliery be there to try for the title again.

A very good one, bbm! First, it's good to have someone else post a puzzle, plus they're trickier when it's not a common word connection.

Two puzzles now - the first one is quite a straightforward one, with a common word/name in the titles, whilst the second has another musical connection. Mr Offenbach appears in both!

Offenbach
Tavener
Ketèlbey
Martinu

Offenbach
Berlioz
Mendelssohn
Rossini

Offenbach - Jaques
Tavener - John
Ketelby - Albert
Martinu - Bohuslav

The only one I can thinkl of is John in that one IGI. Iam having thoughts on the second conection.

No deal on the first one! The common word connection is in the titles rather than their names...

IGI, I think I've got the easy one  Smiley

Offenbach - Madame Papillon
Tavener - Butterfly Dreams
Ketèlbey - Fairy Butterfly
Martinu - The Butterfly that Stamped

A fifth composer for the second puzzle:

Offenbach
Berlioz
Mendelssohn
Rossini
Saint-Saëns

...and a clue: the five works are all linked by a single composition. It might help to start guessing a few of the compositions, all of which are very well-known.

Absolutely nothing to do with the lovely Helen, bbm. Try guessing/identifying some of the works first...  Wink
