Very good, John and Tony. The Strauss is from an Arabian Nights-sounding operetta, Indigo and the Forty Thieves!

Copland – The Red Pony
Prokofiev – The Love for Three Oranges
Ives – Yellow Leaves
Holst – Brook Green Suite
Gershwin – Rhapsody in Blue
Johann Strauss II - Indigo und die Vierzig Räuber
Delius - Danish Songs: The violet

Ooh, George..you've gone all technicoloured!  Cheesy

Lots of alternatives I could have picked...Butterworth or Vaughan Williams for Green, for example...or Michael Torke for just about any of them!!

Which reminds me of a silly joke we did as kids:

George: Zippy, Zippy, quick! Bungle's gone out!

Zippy: Well put some more paraffin on him, George!

Thanks for another entertaining diversion, IGI. Indigo is a bit of a hard one to set a clue for, I suppose. There's a song by Mozart about a violet, I think. As for rainbows in general, there's one at the end of Das Rheingold, and other places in music, no doubt.

Yes, Tony, if you hadn't picked up on the colour connection, I'd have offered Wagner as a final composer with an appropriate clue to seek a pot of gold...  Smiley

I heard the Strauss Indigo Overture a few weeks back, and it's quite a jolly piece - not sure why it doesn't appear more often.

As well as the Wagner rainbow, there's a piece by Christopher Theofanidis titled Rainbow Body, which won Masterprize, I think, a few years ago...rather good IMHO.

IGI,

One of my favourite Duke Ellington compositions is Mood Indigo which his band/orchestra recorded many times, here's the original pre-swing version from 1930.

I wonder if Ollie would ever try the clarinet part?  Smiley or improvise something for it?

It piece to. We've been playing Sing Sing Sing at band recently and our kit drummer is really good at playing his solo spots. I cant for the life of me remember the composer. Are there any good recordings of this at all?

Ah, he of King Louie/ Jungle Book fame!

Time for a new connection. Try and link these four suspects...

Dvorak
Smetana
Meyerbeer
Johann Strauss II
