IGI, let's get this out of the way. I just have this itchy feeling that the Debussy is the prelude, 'Puck'. Tell me I'm wrong, and I'll go away and lick my wounds. Or my cat's, just to give her a break.

Ah, martle, it's not Puck. I should provide more of a clue, perhaps. You need to dig beyond the titles in the Tippett and Adams operas, and the Debussy and Paganini are not linked to actual compositions....

Is there not a line in Malcolm Williamson's Julius Caesar Jones "Achilles is a tortoise"? Something I remember (possibly incorrectly) from my youth...

Van Dieren - Green BAZ - The yellow and the green Arne - The blind beggar of Bethnal Green Rozsa - Green fire ?? Well, that certainly sounds as though it might turn out to be convincing - but neither environmental friendliness nor immartleity is on the road to this particular salvation, I'm afraid! I'll give you a clue; it's not all the same word but eight different ones that are linked in what could be said to be a well known way. Best, Alistair

Another near-death experience out in the bleak hinterlands that are IGI's NMC thread! It hurts, it causes insomnia and virtual mental breakdown, it cuases Milly to weep, George to go all ...but it's so good when you get there!

Ah, there's plenty more where that came from! I'm working on an interesting teaser at the moment, whilst listening to Rusalka - glorious piece; am hoping to get to a performance in Rome in Feb. (that's not a clue towards the puzzle, btw) Just to flag up Alistair's intriguing list: Evelyn Glennie Bernard van Dieren Bernd Aloys Zimmermann Thomas Arne Jerry Bock Michael Finnissy* John Gay* Miklós Rósza *indicating a little licence taken? Any thoughts?
