This isn't nearly fiendish enough so I know what the answer is going to be. But nothing ventured... Rimsky-Korsakov - The Golden Cockerel Ligeti - The Melancholy Dove Beach - Blackbird Hills Messiaen - Among many, Oiseaux Exotiques Raff - Can't see any Martle connection though The Vet's Bill?

Sadly, no birds in this one, George. I reckon Mort would spot the connection...( especially with her new specs)

George, I'm sure everyone will join me in admiration for your Sisyphean labours. I would love to take part in these treasure hunts, but every time I look at them I start anticipating sleepless nights, abandonment of personal hygiene, neglect of family and work and ultimately destitution and a pauper's grave. So I force myself unwillingly to turn aside and apply myself to other more pointless activities. IGI, I hope you can live with yourself knowing what you're doing to us all. Behind every George Garnett cower ten other pusillanimous Members.

Just a thought - it's not something to do with synaesthesia, is it? That would connect Rimsky and Messiaen, at least - I don't know enough about the others!

Got it in one, Ruth - congratulations! Amy BeachAmy’s mother encouraged her to relate melodies to the colors blue, pink, or purple, but before long Amy had a wider range of colors, which she associated with certain major keys. Thus C was white, F-sharp black, E yellow, G red, A green, A-flat blue, D-flat violet or purple, and E-flat pink. Until the end of her life she associated these colors with those keys.LigetiI associate sounds with colours and shapes. Like Rimbaud, I feel that all letters have a colour." "Major chords are red or pink, minor chords are somewhere between green and brown. I do not have perfect pitch, so when I say that C minor has a rusty red-brown colour and D minor is brown this does not come from the pitch but from the letters C and D. I think it must go back to my childhood. RaffIn 1855, the composer Joachim Raff "declared that the sounds of instruments produced colour impressions of various kinds. Thus the sound of a flute produced the sensation of intense azure blue; of the oboe, yellow; cornet, green; trumpet, scarlet; the French horn, purple; and the bassoon, grey.Rimsky-KorsakovRimsky-Korsakov synesthetically experienced colors for musical keys (musical keys →color). For example, for him, the key of C major was white, and the key of B major was a gloomy dark blue with a steel shine.Messiaen was a self-confessed synesthete too. Mostly taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_people_with_synesthesiaI'm sure Mort has written that she is a synesthete as well. Scriabin was going to be my final clue, although I've also read that Sibelius was one. I wonder how early on people make the link between colours and keys (or instruments in Raff's case)?

Gosh, Brava Ruth!! I've a feeling we have one or two other synaesthetes here as well. MabelJane? George, I'm sure everyone will join me in admiration for your Sisyphean labours. I would love to take part in these treasure hunts, but every time I look at them I start anticipating sleepless nights, abandonment of personal hygiene, neglect of family and work and ultimately destitution and a pauper's grave. I have to admit to five out of six of those and I've just put an application in, via a very helpful young man at the Citizens' Advice Bureau, for one of those pauper's graves. There's a long waiting list apparently. But if my example serves as a terrible object lesson to others of the dangers of falling into the clutches of The Inquisitor then my life will not have been entirely in vain.

I worked it out as soon as I'd read that about Martle! Green....colours and it all fell into place, but unfortunately I didn't have time to post as I had to dash out for an appointment. So you'll just have to take my word for it I'm afraid. I've been on and off the case all day though......!

We could add Scriabin here. For him, C major was red (as was F major oddly enough), G major was orange, D major yellow, etc.

Yes, Tony. Scriabin was going to be my final clue. I wonder if people who have synaesthesia feel it is a benefit (Mort? MJ?) and how it impacts on their listening?
In the meantime, here's a little teaser:

Is this a musical connection IGI? They were all polymaths, in particular, educationalists and writers.

Oh, yes. You're seeking four compositions which although not containing a common word, do connect logically.
