Martinů's Dance of the Sparrow Hawk from Spalícek and Korngold's Sea Hawk? No, not hawks...did you hear the excerpts from The Sea Hawk featured in Afternoon on 3 last week? Stirring stuff, full of swash and buckle!

Korngold
Hindemith
Martinů
Prokofiev
Ravel

Is it that they've all written piano pieces for the left hand only?

Korngold     Suite for 2 violins, cello and piano left hand
Hindemith    ?
Martinu       Concertino in G for left hand piano and small orchestra
Prokofiev     ?
Ravel          Piano Concerto for left hand in D

By Jove, I think you may have it, Mills! Prokofiev certainly did (concerto 4), and I bet Hindemith did - just can't call it to mind...

I'm sure we've had that connection before - I set it? - and someone like IGI got it very quickly.......

So perhaps it's a different connection....

Yup, so did Hindemith!

If that's not it, I'm checking into the NMC mental health clinic.  Tongue

Congratulations, Milly!!
They were all commissioned by Paul Wittgenstein, who lost his right arm in WWI. I could also have added Bortkiewicz, Franz Schmidt and Richard Strauss.

Korngold - Piano Concerto for the left hand, Op. 17, 1923
Hindemith - Klaviermusik mit Orchester, Op. 29, 1923
Martinů - Concertino for piano left hand and chamber orchestra, Op. 173, 1926
Prokofiev - Piano Concerto No. 4 for the left hand, Op. 53, 1931
Ravel - Piano Concerto for the Left Hand in D (1929–1930)

Pretty sure we didn't have this before, Tommo, although someone (and it could well have been your good self) suggested it as an incorrect answer a few weeks ago and I squirrelled it away...

The surefire way to stay clear of the clinic is to set a puzzle yourself, Milly. Honestly, it's definitely easier sitting on this side of the fence!  Wink

Do I need to call in the Doctor, Richard?

Roll Eyes Well that's no good at all, I was looking forward to issuing the kind of triumphant denials with which Mr Torquemada greets a string of inadequate guesses. Clearly I shall have to try harder next time.

Bizet - Le Docteur Miracle
Henze - Ein Landarzt
Koechlin - Le Docteur Fabricius
Stockhausen - Dr.K - Sextett

Back to the drawing board...

As we've noted before, it's a tough and bleak life out here in the NMC wastes.  Cry
