Both Offenbach and Copland were in their different ways regarded as politically suspect (Offenbach during the Franco-Prussian war because of his German origins, Copland during the McCarthy era).  Tartini was threatened with prosecution, and Caccini was involved in political intrigue in the Medici court ....

Anything there?

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

That's an intriguing link, PW, but not the rather more mundane one I'm after.

I think a clue may be in order. It would be an impossibility to extend this list in one direction, and probably an act of guesswork to extend it in the other (at least for anyone relatively well known).

Mmmmm, this all points to significant dates, perhaps?

Years of death offer some sort of sequence:

Copland 1990
Offenbach 1880
Tartini 1770

I can't pin down a Caccini 1660 death, sadly.

That's because, dumbass that I am, I was looking at the gifted Italian soprano, Settimia Caccini, rather than the composer, IGI. Sorry!
Oh, the shame. You got it, anyway!!  Cheesy Smiley Smiley

Hoorah! Never mind, martle....Settimia will do just fine!

The only possible 1550 connection I could find was Giovan (presumably Giovanni) Tommaso di Maio who died ca.1550.

And I was looking for a devilish connection too
Tartini - Devil's trill
Copland - Devil's in the kitchen (used in the Hoedown from Rodeo)
Offenbach - er Tales of Hoffmann
+ just beginning to get somewhere with Caccini when . . .

They all wrote a Stabat Mater

But they lived up to hundreds of years apart. How could they have got together to write one? Wink
