Oh well done! I have to say that I didn't see that one at all. Completely passed me by! But well done IGi for such a fab idea!
Can I bump my latest quartet please?

Ligeti
Berlioz
Nyman
Purcell

Nothing to do with the word 'grand'.

Anything to do with The Tempest, hh?

Berlioz - Lelio: Fantasia on Shakespeare's »Tempest« (No. 6)
Nyman - Prospero's Books
Purcell - The Tempest
Ligeti began work on a second opera based on The Tempest, but ill-health prevented its completion

Everything to do with The Tempest!
In my mind, the link was that they had all nearly written operas based on it.
Purcell's music is nudging towards opera, Ligeti spoke about writing one, IIRC Nyman has talked about how the Masque from Prospero's Books was a mini-scena from a non-existent opera, and I was thinking of the opera within Berlioz's Lelio.

Bach
Brahms
Mahler
Schubert

They all spoke German!  Wink

Or could it be to do with unfinished works:

Bach - The Art of Fugue
Mahler - Symphony No.10
Schubert - Symphony No.8

Brahms? Mmmmm, didn't he destroy any unfinished works?

Tommo

They all wrote works that were later arranged/reorchestrated by Schoenberg Smiley

Bach: Chorale prelude 'Schmücke dich, o liebe Seele' (arr. Schoenberg, 1922)
Brahms: Piano quartet in G minor, Op. 25 (arr. 1937)
Mahler: Das Lied von der Erde (arr. Schoenberg & Webern, 1921)
Schubert: Ständchen, D889 (arr. Schoenberg, 1921)

Good thinking, Dan. If it's not Schoenberg, it could be Berio:

Bach - Contrapunctus XIX
Brahms - Clarinet Sonata op.120 no.1
Mahler - Frühe Lieder
Schubert - Rendering for orchestra

Dan's right!  I was going to give J Strauss II as a next chap.

There are several possible works for several of the composers.  How many can you get?

Bach - Chorale prelude Komm, Gott, Schöpfer, heiliger Geist BWV 631 (orchestral)
Bach - Prelude and fugue in E-flat major “St Anne”, BWV 552 (orchestral)
Mahler - Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (voice, flute, clarinet, harmonium, piano, 2 violins, viola, violoncello, double bass, percussion)

Mmmm...something linked to animals?

Shostakovich - The Tale of the Silly Little Mouse
Janacek - The Cunning Little Vixen
Zappa - Weasels Ripped My Flesh (or Hot Rats)

Not sure about Berlioz, however....must be something stoatally different!
