Mark/Martle

Mäntyjärvi  was new to me until recently. Well worth exploring.

A slightly desperate guess - is it anything to do with scars/marks on body?

Zappa: Weasels ripped my flesh

Janacek: Jenufa (J's scar)

[edit for a completely mis-remembered fact, which leaves this suggestion even more hopelessly meagre than before ... Embarrassed)

I was thinking some kind of Boulez link given the Zappa and the Berlioz...
But then I thought better of it.

Would it be as simple as works which are women's names?

Janacek:  Jenufa
Berliz: Helene
Shosta: Katerina
Zappa: Suzy Creamcheese
Swayne: Ophelia
Mozart: Julie
Mantyjarvi: Maria

Nope, thought not  Cheesy

I'm not sure I'm really making any progress on this, but wonder if it could possibly be to do with cousins?

Giles Swayne is a cousin of Elizabeth Maconchy
Berlioz - Béatrice et Bénédict: Héro and Béatrice are cousins
Janáček - Jenůfa: Števa and Laca are both in love with their cousin Jenůfa
Mozart - Carl Maria von Weber was the cousin of Mozart's wife, Constanze
Perhaps Zappa had a famous cousin or wrote a song about one?

Shostakovich? No famous cousin that I can locate, but he does have a famous son, so is he the odd one out?!  Undecided

Can't be that., IGI, Zappa'a sons and daughters have each found fame in their ways. Indeed, Diva, who, IIRC became a foley artist, turned up on the recent television documentary about The Mighty Boosh. Wink

Thanks, martle...feeling better already, (despite the fact I should be finishing work for tomorrow's staff meeting and Thursday's interview  Embarrassed) especially as I notice that there was a hit in my last attempt: now, what links the works Jaakko Mäntyjärvi, whose work list catalogue I have before me, and Janáček's Jenůfa?  Curiouser and curiouser...

There is a link, but it may be a tad obscure (surely not?):

Mäntyjärvi wrote a choral piece entitled Day is Cooling - which, IIRC, is very close to the opening line of Jenufa (which I think is about the day cooling, Steva not having returned etc - I'm reading this at work and so libretto-less and Kobbe-less)

So.....

Are we looking at twilight, the end of the day, sunset or something along those lines?

And Giles Swayne wrote a piece called Goodnight Sweet Ladies ...

(of course this could all be barking up completely the wrong tree)

And then pw, there is Berlioz  "Bonne nuit, ma petite"

And Shosta's Five Days and Five NIGHTS

And Mozart's Eine Kleiner Nacht Musicke

Zappa.  Night out on Freak Mountain

Sorted. Puzzle solved.

Hurrah!

Looks promising! A better Berlioz would be Nuits d'Ete, wouldn't it?

Oi!  You snuck in Britten there, very sneaky.  Rose?

No, I got it Mahlerei

Jenufa was the step daughter.

Lady McBeth was lusted over by her father in law.

The answer is dysfunctional relationships!

Problem solved.  I really don't need to post the answers to the others do I?

Hurrah.  40000 million points to me.

Sorry, wrong thread  Cheesy
