Berlioz
Janacek
Shostakovich
Zappa

Works written when the composer was infatuated with someone?

Janacek - Kátya Kabanová (Kamila Stösslová)
Berlioz - Symphonie fantastique (Harriet Smithson)
DSCH - Symphony No.10 (Elmira Nazirova)
Zappa - Huh

Nice easy one, this:

Schönberg
Carter
Knussen
At the risk of whatever may be heaped upon me for self-quotation, may I mention that this one seems still to be outstanding?...

Nothing to do with night, alistair?

Schoenberg - Verklärte Nacht
Carter - Night Fantasies
Knussen - something to do with Where the Wild Things are?

Thanks for the response and your try - but I now find myself somewhat astonished that even you, of all people, haven't yet figured (no, not transfigured!) this out yet!

A clue: not necessarily a piece per se in all cases...

Oliver Knussen has conducted/recorded a lot of Carter's music, so could it be a Carter piece somehow linked to/ quoting Schoenberg, conducted by Knussen?

No, you're barking up the wrong tree (and no, that's not a clue).

I'm not sure I'm really making any progress on this, but wonder if it could possibly be to do with cousins?

Giles Swayne is a cousin of Elizabeth Maconchy
Berlioz - Béatrice et Bénédict: Héro and Béatrice are cousins
Janáček - Jenůfa: Števa and Laca are both in love with their cousin Jenůfa
Mozart - Carl Maria von Weber was the cousin of Mozart's wife, Constanze
Perhaps Zappa had a famous cousin or wrote a song about one?

Shostakovich? No famous cousin that I can locate, but he does have a famous son, so is he the odd one out?!  Undecided

Abit warmer, but not much, I'm afraid! Any Schönberg "quotation" involved here (if any) is not in a piece by Carter, although that's not to say that a piece by Carter necessarily has no place here...

Nothing quite so complicated Smiley The clues are in the works themselves.

Janacek: Jenufa
Berlioz
DSCH
Mozart
Zappa
Swayne
Mäntyjärvi

Thanks, martle...feeling better already, (despite the fact I should be finishing work for tomorrow's staff meeting and Thursday's interview  Embarrassed) especially as I notice that there was a hit in my last attempt: now, what links the works Jaakko Mäntyjärvi, whose work list catalogue I have before me, and Janáček's Jenůfa?  Curiouser and curiouser...
