Era solo un mio sospetto

I suspect if we can find the remotest connection between Henze and Parry, we will have cracked it.  I don't really know them, and I can't imagine anyone being equally enthusiastic about both.  I don't know any hymn tunes by Henze.

Parry - Blessed pair of Sirens

A frayed knot, Tommo. The Parry is a song and is probably the least known of the quintet of compositions. Perhaps the sixth composer will give the game away...

Henze
Rossini
Vivaldi
Parry
Handel
Respighi

Oh, I was working on an Orpheus connection but Respighi rather puts the cat among the pigeons.

Birds?

Henze: The Hoopoe and the Triumph of Filial Love
Rossini: The Thieving Magpie
Vivaldi: One of the Op 6 Concerti, 'The Cuckoo'
Parry: The Blackbird
Handel: 'The Cuckoo and The Nightingale' Organ Concerto
Respighi: The Birds (Various)

(...bump...)

Nice easy one, this:

Schönberg
Carter
Knussen
Any takers?...

I'd rather forgotten this one was still open. Had we established that it's not exactly three musical compositions we're seeking?
Er - no, we hadn't - but since it's evidently proved somewhat intractable so far, let's do so now! Go on, then - you've gotten it now, haven't you?!

Nicely done, Mr Garnett! An alternative for the Vivaldi could well have been The Goldfinch from his op.10.

Alistair, I think it's time for a 'wild stab':

Knussen - Hums and Songs of Winnie-the-Pooh
Schoenberg - Gurrelieder
Carter - The Minotaur

It's missed, I'm afraid. What I meant was that you asked if it had been established that we're not necessarily hunting down three musical compositions and I agreed that it had not, so suggested that we do so now - in other words that we DO establish that we're not necessarily hunting down three musical compositions here!

Go on - have another go; I can sense you're just a whisker away from it! (and no, that's not meant to be a clue)...

Is it a Carter work, which Knussen has conducted/recorded?
Might the Carter/ Schoenberg link be something Carter has said/ lectured about Arnold Schoenberg?

Yes and no (sorry, I'm not telling you which just yet!)...

Now that one is easy, bbm. I don't know your final three composers, but I do know that RVW and Edward Gregson each wrote a Tuba Concerto and a quick google confirms that so did Sparke, Steptoe and Golland!

Shall I give the game away, then?...

I'll follow up a clue if I can, Alistair...  Wink

As we await either a solution or a clue from Alistair, here's one to be going on with. Connect these four composers in this common word link:

Bax
Prokofiev
Tchaikovsky
Haydn Wood
