A pedant writes: isn't that Debussy though? (Not 'Aubade of the clown' but the other one.)

Good call, Member Sudden! I hadn't spotted that in my haste to point out the Alborada.

Time for a musical connection with a difference – a return of the anagram acrostic. Here are nine composers, listed alphabetically – name a composition by each of them and the initial letters will make up a tenth composition by one of the listed composers.

Bax
Janacek
Puccini
Rachmaninov
R Strauss
Stravinsky
Vaughan Williams
Verdi
Warlock

Happy hunting!

An extremely impressive opening gambit, George, but sadly 'no deal' on that selection. In many respects, you're close though. I should add that whilst the Puccini and Verdi are operatic, the Strauss and Janacek are not. The mystery work you're seeking is two words, btw.

OPENING GAMBIT?!!!

Only in the sense that it was the first response, George! (Looking scarily like a Brian Blessed lookalike there!  Shocked)

It's probably worth having a punt at individual pieces in the meantime to establish some letters.

opening gambit

Is this not a tautology, Holy Guvnor? <grovelling and fearful>

Here is a poor sinner's attempt:

Bax                          Prelude for a Solemn Occasion
Janacek                    Sinfonietta
Puccini                      Madam's but a fly
Rachmaninov             Isle of the dead
R Strauss                  Arabella
Stravinsky                 Oedipus Rex
Vaughan Williams      Five Variants of Dives and Lazarus
Verdi                        Luisa Miller
Warlock                    Capriol

VW                         Flos Campi

Another quite brilliant attempt containing no correct solutions, sadly. The Stravinsky is balletic, the Rachmaninov operatic.

Well, that means it is Aleko or Francesca.  Haven't given Francesca a spin lately will put it on now, absolutely love it.  So swirlingly atmospheric.  So, alphabet wise I guess it is A rather than F

Verdi
Warlock

Happy listening to Francesca, Anty.  Smiley

Hurrah IGI!  The first piece of the puzzle, more by luck than judgement.  Now, you said it was two words, remind me of what you said, does the first word consist of three letters?  Cheesy
