Well done, Richard. On reflection, not a fantastic puzzle as there are so many alternatives, but I don't want to detract from Mr Barrett's glory.  Wink

It was a youthful theme...

Here are some of my line-up:

Tchaikovsky - Album for the Young, Op. 39
Janacek - Mládí (Youth), suite for wind sextet
Rachmaninov – ‘Youth’ Symphony
Elgar – Dream Children or Nursery Suite or The Wand of Youth
Coates - Joyous Youth Suite
Kabalevsky - Piano Concerto No. 3 in D major ("Youth"), Op. 50

Extra points would be awarded, if we did the whole points things (which I have no intention of doing!), for other youthful examples. (I had nine more composers on the subs' bench...)

No, feel free, I almost didn't bother because it didn't seem fiendish enough...

But what is the opposite of a Grand Inquisitor? An Upright Inquisitor? A Modest Inquisitor?

Gosh, I've been gone for hours and nobody's gone for the 'invisible' extra points re the 'youth'/'childhood' connection. Would it help if I dangled the composers before you?  Smiley

Schumann
Bartók
Britten
Dohnányi
Mussorgsky
Hanson
Debussy
Humperdinck
Mahler

I didn't realise we were still playing, but here goes, in a bid to get a cup of tea (rather than coffee) at 11.

Schumann - Scenes from Childhood Op 15 OR Album for the Young Op 68
Bartók - For Children BB53
Britten - Young Persons' Guide to the Orchestra
Dohnányi - Variations on a Nursery Song
Mussorgsky - Dispute d'enfants aprčs jeux (aka The Tuileries Gardens from Pictures)
Debussy - Children's Corner
Humperdinck - Konigskinder
Mahler - Des Knaben Wunderhorn

Someone else can do Hanson, I'm off to bed. Goodnight!

Good work and a cup of tea, as requested, Your Ladyship - bone china cup, you'll note.

The only variant I had was Mussorgsky's song cycle The Nursery (great performance by Boris Christoff on his EMI disc of Mussorgsky songs).

A rather surreal day on the boards today!

Here's a new connection to spot. Link these four composers:

Beethoven
Nřrgĺrd
Walton
Puccini

Oh, I don't know.  I work in an office full of engineers and a lot of it looks quite normal from that perspective ...

Beethoven
Nřrgĺrd
Walton
Puccini

OK, here's a guess to get things rolling

Nřrgĺrd - To pastoraler
Beethoven - Symphony No 6 Pastoral
Walton - arrangement of Sheep may safely graze from the Wise Virgins suite
Puccini - The shepherd boy's song in Tosca

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

Beethoven
Nřrgĺrd
Walton
Puccini
Britten
