Saint Saens - Tortoises (from CotA)
Birtwistle - The Woman and the Hare
Ibert - Tortoises
Stravinsky - The Old Man and the Hare

...is the right answer!

I note, Mr Martle, you seem to be lagging even further behind Member Sudden at present. All part of your cunning plan, no doubt.

OK
Here's a teaser that should keep people a little occupied.
There are four composers to start off with, but their number shall grow, one every day until their number is complete (and then I may add subs if I'm feeling generous).
The order in which they appear is significant.
We are not looking for a common word; the link is thematic.

We start with:

William Boyce
Richard Ayleward
Gustav Holst
Richard Barrett

I will add another one around this time tomorrow (or on Friday morning).

William Boyce
Richard Ayleward
Gustav Holst
Richard Barrett

It has occurred to me that this might be a little too cryptic at this stage, so I'm proposing a parallel list of composers. It's rather like a quick/cryptic crossword. The composers in my initial list are the cryptic clues, but John McCabe is my first 'quick' clue.
More to follow each day.

Cryptic
1 William Boyce
2 Richard Ayleward
3 Gustav Holst
4 Richard Barrett

Quick
1 John McCabe

Dual clues? Intriguing!

Is the McCabe Chagall Windows by any chance?

It is not I'm afraid.

A couple of obvious candidates then...

Leoncavallo - I Pagliacci
Holst - The Perfect Fool
Boyce - Incidental music for The Tempest

I'm afraid that none of these are correct.
I'm reserving clues for a little while. I don't want it to end too soon...

Pity - I was starting to spot a possible connection there.

Well, if the Leoncavallo's not Pagliacci, is it La bohème?
Didn't Boyce write a piece known as The Shepherd's Lottery?

If he didn't, he should have! Neither of these works is correct.

Cryptic
1 William Boyce
2 Richard Ayleward
3 Gustav Holst
4 Richard Barrett
5 Ruggero Leoncavallo
6 Orlando di Lassus

Quick
1 John McCabe
2 Cornelius Cardew
3 Robert Schumann

And yes, certainly William Boyce did write The Shepherd's Lottery (a musical entertainment in two parts with words by M Mendez). But that has nothing to do with my quiz!

Is it a loosely 'academic' connection?

Boyce Treatise on harmonic theory
Holst The wanerding scholar
Barrett Tracts
Lassus Liber missarum

Cardew Treatise or The great learning

The Holst is almost correct, but it's a movement from The Planets.

Is it a loosely 'academic' connection?

Boyce Treatise on harmonic theory
Holst The wanerding scholar
Barrett Tracts
Lassus Liber missarum

Cardew Treatise or The great learning

Nice try, but it's more fiendish than that.
I'll be issuing a significant clue tonight as to how the whole puzzle works, which might make things a little easier.
