Sorry. None of those are correct, though the Barrett is very close. In fact, CHARON is part of the work for which I am looking...

Yes. And Holst is - er - Uranus?
No! Boyce - Heart of Oak?
I'm afraid not. The Boyce that we're looking for is an ode.

The Holst is correct, but the Boyce is not (though the work I'm looking for was written for a similar occasion). Remember that both works come from the cryptic set.

Is the Boyce something from the Ode for St. Cecilia's Day? 'Hail Harmony!' perhaps?! (although the link between The Opening of the Mouth and Mars might hint at dentistry!

No. Harmony is not hailed! and there are no dentists on the horizon. I may have been mistaken about Pindar's Ode. For what occasion was it written?

Apparently, Pindar's Ode was written for one of London's first musical 'clubs', the Apollo Academy, for which Boyce also composed the Ode for St Cecilia's Day.

Cryptic 1 William Boyce (ode) 2 Richard Ayleward 3 Gustav Holst, 'Mars' from The Planets 4 Richard Barrett, Opening of the mouth 5 Ruggero Leoncavallo 6 Orlando di Lassus 7 George Frideric Handel
Quick 1 John McCabe 2 Cornelius Cardew 3 Robert Schumann 4 Thomas Morley
The two sets of clues lead you to related solutions. The quick set are obviously the easiest and will lead you to thematically related solutions. The cryptic set are at one stage remove from the thematic solution to the quick solutions. You will not see very much in common within the solutions of the cryptic set but you will see that the solution to clue 1 of the cryptics is related to the solution of clue 1 of the quicks and so on. This might not make much sense now, but I think it will as the puzzle continues to reveal itself.

It's not that one, but the occasion is correct this time.
