I'm thinking rather Grave e sfrenato for Hübler to go with those other quasi-contradictory directions...

Ah.  Perhaps I would have thought of that, had I ever heard of it!   Cool

That does, indeed, help.

Well, it could have been right!  Cheesy  But it would not be fiendish enough would it?

This one's not especially fiendish and should fall relatively quickly now...

If it's not Night but the Ipplito Ivanov is right, is it either Turkish or Fragments we are looking for  Huh

Dallapiccola - Frammenti Sinfonici dal Balletto Marsia
Ippolitov-Ivanov - Turkish Fragments
Debussy -  Huh Huh
Shostakovich - Five fragments from Katarina Izmailova

In my customary role as gap-filler once greater minds have actually solved the thing:

Debussy - The Martrydom of St Sebastian (symphonic fragments)

Oh buglar, buglar and thrice buglar!!  I turned that up on Google and sheet music and thought it meant fragments as in excerpts, not fragments as in the real world that actually exist as a fragment!! <doh emoticom>

Something to do with the turn of the seasons?
Rorem has The End of Summer
Myaskovsky has Yellowed Leaves
Janacek could be i.X.1905?
Respighi has Poema Autunnale...
