Kurtág - Doloroso for solo viola?

I'm afraid not.

We may need assistance from an old friend (Golden Age Waffle) here..

A quartet for you this Wednesday morning:

A Fryderyk Chopin in Luca Francesconi
The György Kurtág of Richard Strauss
The Alun Hoddinott of the Michael Balfe
The Elizabeth Lutyens of Gerald Finzi

Is the Lutyens the viola piece "Echo of the Wind"?

The Echo of the Wind of ....(something by Finzi)

You're thinking in the right way, but the viola piece is not by Lutyens.
IGI's suggestion of a viola piece by Kurtág is right on the button, it's just not that viola piece.

Are these going to be moments from that Waffle Play we wrote on the old boards?

The Balfe must surely be the opera, but is it "Geraldine" (given your recent Harold-Gerald sojourn)?

"Signs of Geraldine"  Wot?
Signs of Bianca?
Signs of Maid or Artois?

Utterly Confused

I should point out at this juncture that plurals are not always respected.

Are these going to be moments from that Waffle Play we wrote on the old boards?

Not quite, but we're going to need the help from a key character (who also posted on one occasion).

The Balfe must surely be the opera, but is it "Geraldine" (given your recent Harold-Gerald sojourn)?

Must it?
Wink

[incidentally, I'm really excited about this... hope someone gets it...]

Ah, does this relate to the Waffle thread(s) on the old BBC boards, or the ones here?

Golden Age Waffles are on the BBC MB.
I regard the waffles available on this board as Silver Age Waffles.
We are looking for a regular character from the BBC MB film scripts.

A Handsome Lad in Body Electric
The Signs of Whipped Cream
The Jack Straw Overture of the Puritans Daughter
The Quincunx of A Young Man's Exhortation

It's probably not that, is it?

My in-depth knowledge of the original Waffle Thread is rather limited, but all this looks horribly plausible, autoharp!  Cheesy

The puzzle itself does not require intimate knowledge of the Waffle threads, but I was hoping that an old waffler might come along and realise what the key was...
I did drop a clue in my very first response...

I did drop a clue in my very first response...

Was it Sydney Greenstreet who was the detective.

One of these clues must be X of the yard.

Oh hang on, they are all detectives with X of the Y.

Like Rumpole of the Bailey (although he wasn't a detective)

There must be a Dixon of Dock Green in there somewhere...

or maybe not

A Fryderyk Chopin in Luca Francesconi
The György Kurtág of Richard Strauss
The Alun Hoddinott of the Michael Balfe
The Elizabeth Lutyens of Gerald Finzi

Regard the clue again.
Note that the wording is different for each one.
We are not looking for four different detectives.
The detective remains the same.
