At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

We're looking for a (polyglot) word link. The word has several (closely related) meanings.

Hurrah! It was looking through Markevitch's works list that I spotted a potential connection. The only work of his I know is L'Envol d'Icare, which should be better known. I think I've seen that Naxos are reissuing discs originally on the Marco Polo label.

Oh nuts. I was looking for a word that meant different things in different languages, not a word that was present in different pieces in different languages. Well done IGI.

OK, something much simpler.
Find an opera by Tchaikovsky, a dance by Berlioz, a section from an orchestral work by Richard Strauss, a symphony by Beethoven and a legendary scene set by Weber and Schoenberg to identify the mystery work.

Is the Berlioz the Danses des Sylphs from The Damnation of Faust, and the Weber the Wolf Glen's scene from Freischutz?

Berlioz - right work, wrong dance: and a partial yes to the Weber - right scene, but more detail needed!
