The connection is one musical instrument  Cheesy and I believe the instrument is played, or should be played, in each case

(rather than the music being an imitation like with some of the bagpipe examples).

Is the instrument supposed to be played on stage? I'm thinking of those 'horn signals' characters are supposed to send each other - Siegfried's horn, Manrico in 'Trovatore'...right tracks?

I'm not sure I can answer for all cases that the 'instrument' is played on stage. It is in some cases, while in others I just know that the sound is required and the music is scored for the 'instrument'.

Castanets?

Wagner - Das Liebesverbot and, I think, in the Venusberg music at the start of Tannhauser
Bizet - Carmen!
Verdi - I Vespri Siciliani

Tambourines, then? Quite often, singers have to 'play' these when 'synching' to the orchestra...

Spontini, in his opera "Alcidor", had a number of anvils upon the stage tuned to certain notes apparently!

As for Bizet, I think that 'La Jolie Fille de Perth' looks promising...Henri Smith, the armourer laments the absence of his beloved after a 'bout of community singing'....surely involving an anvil or two?!  Wink

I didn't even know of Alcidor!

Nor did I! 1825, so quite late Spontini. It was the only result I got in ask.com, whereas Google threw up lots of Anvil Choruses from 'Trov'.

Well, well, it was quite an 'andful this connection  Grin

But got there in the end, well done opilec for the inspired thoughts at 12.13am !!!!

It does seem so obvious when you see Wagner and Verdi at the foot of the list. I was quite surprised at how many I collected, I was going to just list 5 but then the Spontini and another turned up when I was trying to confirm one of the others - I am not actually familiar with any of these, just been reading about percussion  Cheesy

Such fun, well done opilec and Il Grande Inquisitor.

Auber - Le Maçon
Berlioz - Benevenuto Cellini
Bizet - Fair Maid of Perth
Gounod - Philémon + Baucis
Spontini - Alcidor
Verdi - Il trovatore
Wagner - Rhinegold - and Siegfried as you say

Try connecting these four composers:

Stravinsky
Milhaud
Castelnuovo-Tedesco
Schoenberg
