To recap:
Takemitsu Britten – Albert Herring Schubert – Die Forelle Bernstein - A Quiet Plaice (hyukhyukhyuk)
I am stumped on the Takemitsu, though.

Your inital thoughts about the sea is where you might net Takemitu's fish. I'm sure you'll move towards the answer soon!

Indeed Tommo! Please note, I came up with this one after Richard’s post about ‘ Trout Mask Replica’ last night, but before this amusing thread (now pulled, of course) appeared at the other place: http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mbradio3/F6643900?thread=3915361 Even the title's been swiped...it was something like 'Fishy Friday'. I resisted thoughts of including ‘Eel’ Trovatore(!), O Sole mio, or recordings by Julian Bream, Marcus Haddock, Albert Sa(l)mmons or the Scampi (sic) Quartet!!

John, could the link be jewels of one type or another?
Auber – Les diamants de la couronne Bizet – Pearl Fishers Gounod – Jewel song from ‘Faust’ Verdi – Eboli steals Elisabetta’s jewellery box in ‘Don Carlos’
or is there a link between characters in operas? I take it that they're all related to stage works?

Ah, did they all create musical instruments/ write for unusual instruments?
Verdi - the 'Verdi drum' used in the Dies Irae Wagner - the 'Wagner tuba' Berlioz wrote a part for 'serpent' into the Symphonie fantastique
