Yes and squash, and melons... Actually there is something a bit creepy about the insides of peppers. Particularly if little new peppers are growing in there. [shudder] I once had a fuchsia that started to deform on one flower so it just kept shooting out more petals that didn't really grow. I ended up slightly scared of it. I think I'm beginning to understand the cluster thing.  |

I was once reduced to a quivering wreck by a sarcastic wren. On the other hand something like this doesn't worry me at all  |

This clusters thing is a new one on me. I've been looking intently at those photos for a little while and can report with some relief that I don't have it myself. I had thought that phobias probably had their origins in some distant evolution-determined past, given that common phobias like spiders, snakes and heights do relate to actual dangers, but clusters don't seem to fit into that scheme, or maybe they do and I haven't thought yet of how, but I'd better stop rambling, there are things to do.  |

That's a new one on me, George. But strangely insidious...  I think phobias are very often related to particular 'trigger' incidents in the past, which one then subconciously avoids repeating, or avoids putting oneself in situations where it's likely to repeat. That's certainly how my little cocktail of agoraphobic symptoms seems to have come about. |

I think phobias are very often related to particular 'trigger' incidents in the past, which one then subconciously avoids repeating, or avoids putting oneself in situations where it's likely to repeat. That's certainly how my little cocktail of agoraphobic symptoms seems to have come about.
I would assume that you're right there, and that triggers/associations may become so subtle that you end up with seemingly very random phobias. One that has always puzzled me is fear of buttons. It seems oddly widespread and consistently seems to provoke a disgust reaction. Just found an anecdote about this with a probable trigger incident: her grandma offered her a tin of old buttons to play with. She ran her fingers through the buttons trying to convince Nancie that they would be fun to play with. Her grandma had several dogs and she had long nails, and when she ran her fingers through those old, dirty buttons, it affected Nancie, and to this day, just the thought of buttons is well, let's just say, sickening. It's called koumpounaphobia, apparently. |

He was terrified that he would find himself in the sea and then be attacked and strangled by a giant squid. A brief and baffled silence. I do think sometimes that if I tried to write out every irrational thing like that that ever enters my head I'd start to convince myself that I was a bit of a lunatic. For instance I can't touch bones (that have had meat on) and I hate people walking close behind me with noisy clothing or carrier bags - I have to stop to look in a shop window or cross the road. Maybe I should invent names for them and submit them to unusualphobias.com... Panic attack triggers for me have been very different to that though, and of course pretty similar to a lot of the phobias that have been discussed on here already. They've included meetings, being in a cinema or theatre, loud conversation, people talking about heart attacks, people faking heart attacks on TV, someone talking over music or other background noise, dramatic scenery, looking down from a balcony, looking up at a tall building, being stuck at traffic lights, driving along a road with no hard shoulder, driving over bridges, walking along the side of a noisy road, driving through tunnels, being on a tube and being on a train, having a blood test... Oh I've just remembered a weird one - seeing things destroyed. Was helping my dad load our old armchair into a crusher at the tip and as soon as it started breaking up I had to look away. Sorry, I said I wasn't going to bore you all to death with those and now I have...   |
