No word of a lie, I once came across a chap called John. Unfortunately his surname was Thomas. What on earth were his parents thinking of?! Poor fellow.

Oh I say, Richard. I knew someone called Victoria Plum once. Wonder if it`s the same person?

On the subject of names and fruit, a certain computer was called Macintosh because it was someone's favourite variety of apple. I always think it was just as well he didn't have a penchant for a ripe Granny Smith.

And I wonder whether our ex glorious leader's wife ever got fed up being called Cherry, instead of sherr-EE.

At around the same time, the Apricot put in a brief appearance, but the Gooseberry never made it to market.

I was looking at some old school sports day records yesterday and I came across one name you will find hard to believe but it's true, honest injun. It's a Chinese boy who chose the first name Semen.

I once worked with a doctor called Jolyon, and always rather liked that name - but only for a cat or dog !

Unusual names are intriguing, I think. I have a dear friend (male) called Hanno, which I've always liked as a name.

I'm a one for using the names I like for my pets.... I've had cats called Elvis, Ambrose, Barley & Hops(brothers), Boots & Slippers(mother & daughter)

Dogs called Kerry, Carla, Pandora, China, Twiggy, Jack, Dolly, Fanny & Tessera.

Luckily for them I never had children!

Yes, cats and dogs can't object to their names, so you can be as bizarre as you like. I had a cat called Dulciana (it's an organ stop), always known as Dulcie. She had a sister called Claribella.

A friend of mine taught a boy called Florian. He's quite a well-known architect now.

A few more thoughts on this thread...I was at 6th form with someone called Jolyon.  Our cat is called Wimple.  Our neighbour's son is called Oscar.

Scherzo is a great name for a kitten!

Back to work now...

While my parents at one time had two goldfish: Benny fishal and Arty fishal, my family don't think I should be allowed to name cats, since York(at) (your cat Huh) and ******'s cat = scat, but my all-time favourites were a couple of ecclesiastical moggies: Magnificat and Beatificat.

(touché Ron!)

I didn't name Dulciana and Claribella myself - Claribella's owner named them, so Dulcie was Dulcie when I got her.

I've had two Orlandos, named after Kathleen Hale's Marmalade Cat.

I know someone with a son called Tarquin.

This reminded me obliquely that a name that used to be used a lot in my family is Torquil. We were threatened with it for my nephew, but luckily for him his parents chickened out.
