I've had two Orlandos, named after Kathleen Hale's Marmalade Cat.

Each with 'green eyes like twin gooseberries', I hope Smiley

Kathleen Hale was another distinguished resident of Aldeburgh at one stage of her life was she not?* One of my treasured possessions is her original artwork for Orlando's birthday party. Unfortunately I can't find an image of it on the web to post.

[*Ah, correction. She just spent long summer holidays there, I now discover. Or 'Owlbarrow-on-Sea' as it becomes when Orlando and his family spend their holiday there.]

The house where Kathleen Hale used to stay in Aldeburgh is called Orlando, and you can spend your holidays there! It's in King Street. I don't think this image can have been drawn by her, but it's a nice idea.

Nope.  No-one nearly as illustrious.  Somebody local  - amazingly.  Poor kid, you can imagine what he went through at school.

A friend of mine finally caved in and allowed her children to have a goldfish. They called it Gelfilte. No word of a lie!

 #  63         Sure, Milly.

Instead of "Donald, far's yir troosers?"  it'll probably be

"Tarky, far's yir paulin?"      Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

Our cat's called Marlowe (as in Kit Marlowe); unbeknown to us, on the same day as we got her, friends of a friend - Mr and Mrs Kitty (sp?) - had a daughter, named Marlo. Kit Marlowe and Marlo Kitty have yet to meet.

My old teacher Robin Holloway has a cat called Celeste.

Someone told me that another composer, Diana Burrell, has two cats named after pieces by Xenakis - one's Pithoprakta, I can't remember the other one.

I haven't contributed to this thread because I was overwhelmed by the subject. I love names! I love some of the quite obscure ones - Torquil would be fine by me, Mary! But I also love names that can be abbreviated in different ways (possibly because my own name, John, can't be abbreviated at all, and I don't have any middle names either). My favourite is Alex, which can also be turned into Sacha, Lexie, Sandy ...

Likewise Elizabeth - I would love to meet someone who abbreviated this as 'Zab'...

Not fond of "J" then I take it?

I wish my name, "Stephen", wasn't plagued by this alternative spelling that I am not comfortable with having applied to myself because the other rather invites people to accent the second syllable more.  And I just don't like that.

Likewise Elizabeth - I would love to meet someone who abbreviated this as 'Zab'...

But you wouldn't dare yourself non? Wink

I think it is Katherine Whitehorn who had a cat called 'Ceremony'. She just liked being able to say to guests,  'Do come in. And please don't stand on Ceremony'.

To raise the tone here a little, I will relate how a late aunt of mine had a cat which was renamed "Max" following the loss of its tail in a road accident. "Max Bare Bum", that is.

Am I missing a pun?
